Who knows if it was that--or just that his usefulness had run its course. A good model for that is (if you can believe it) from a movie(!) entitled "Shooter" with Mark Wahlberg. It's what you said and other things all rolled up into one. In the movie, one man has been their 'go to' guy, but they need him as bait to get Mark W.'s character to be drawn out and caught. The colonel said, "Sometimes the best way to catch a wolf is to tie some bait to a tree." The guy who would be the bait said, "What happens to the bait?" The colonel said, "It depends. But that's the nature of being the bait."

The guy knew he was a dead man - and that his usefulness had run its course. Saddam--same thing. Saddam was the bait to get our troops over there and keep the propaganda machine rolling. His capture, trial and hanging was part of the nature of being our CIA-installed dictator since 1959, when Saddam was only 22 years old. We knew what kind of thug he was from the beginning but he was a convenient tool, and we made him what he was as head of Iraq because it suited our purposes. Later, in the end, he was much more useful as a scapegoat and vilified as a reincarnated and defeated Biblical Nebuchanezzar - of which the archetype was built up quite a bit during our invasion. That's a good way to get the Xians on board - to make them believe that our mission was Biblical prophecy unfolding.

The only thing is -- that the 'Babylonian Brotherhood/Whore' scripturally sits upon MANY WATERS...NOT OVER THERE IN PHYSICAL IRAQ. The ones at the top ARE the Babylonian Brotherhood still practicing their same pagan crap since Babel. But Christians are too stupid and un-studied usually to see anything complex (just push that rabid patriot button) and that it is the Babylonian Brotherhood pulling the strings at the top of the pyramid. Clever deceits that have the world pointing THERE instead of HERE....every time. Unfortunately.
