Well, now we know one of his problems.

It's hard to say what is wrong.  He needs to go to the dr and get a diagnosis.  It could be an artery getting blocked.  The back pain is a symptom, and along with the other stuff, sounds possible.  He should be scoped for that heartburn problem, too.  It could be a hernia, like you mentioned.  And, maybe he has more than one ailment.  It sounds like a very serious matter.  My mom's friend just noticed he couldn't carry as heavy of things, and my mom talked him into going to the dr and they did a 5 way bypass right away.  So, sometimes there are not many symptoms, yet the illness can be serious.  We cannot properly tell you what to do unless we know what is wrong, at least I can't.  But, one thing to consider is if he has any mercury fillings or root canals, because they can cause many illnesses.
