  Not all LED lights are created equal
  I've been using LED lights for a few years now and I think the essence of the technology is fantastic. LED lights are great in off grid applications as they sip so little power; even far less than CFL's (Compact Fluorescent Lamps) - and without the mercury concerns.
  
  The technology has evolved to the point that they are becoming more commonplace in homes too. LED's have the potential to contribute greatly to electricity related carbon emissions.
  
  But not all LED's are created equal and the current situation is putting makers of quality LED products in a difficult position.
  
  Unfortunately, the rise in popularity and pressures of pricing competition has seen an increasing trend of what are referred to (but not marketed as) "disposable" LED lights. These inferior products threaten to give all LED lighting a bad name as the market is riddled with them.
  
  I've bought a few LED products that have started out fine, but after a hundred or so hours of use, the lights dim, then after a while longer they flicker, and then ultimately go out.
  
  These are not isolated incidents, nor am I just unlucky - this appears to be the nature of the design in many cases, another example of planned obsolescence.
  
  So how do merchants and manufacturers justify the kazillion hour ratings they advertise for these products?
  
  I've been communicating with Tim Gravert of Caberra Systems, Inc.; who have been in the solid state electronic and LED industry for 30 years. Tim is also very angry that many manufacturers are misleading the public in regard to "lifetime ratings" as this impacts on quality companies who provide ratings based on real-world conditions.
  
  It's my understanding from the information Tim has given me and subsequent research that LED lifetime ratings are often based on the "L70" standard - a calculation based partly on operating the light in ambient temperatures of just 15 degrees Celsius or 59 degrees Fahrenheit. The "70" means the light should maintain 70 percent of its brightness over the period of time.
  
  Another important point is that the ambient temperature under L70 is meant to be measured in the area immediately surrounding the LEDs, not the general air temperature. Bearing in mind that heat is one of the greatest enemies of LED lights and cheap LED lights tend to be built in such a way that does not allow for rapid heat dissipation either, you can see where this is heading.
  
  While even cheap LED's run pretty cool in comparison to an incandescent lamp, which is part of what makes them so efficient, I know from my own experience that cheap LED lights get warmish, even when the general air temperature is quite chilly - and most people would have their homes heated to above the 15 degrees Celsius / 59 degrees Fahrenheit mark anyway.
  
  So, when a manufacturer makes the claim the light will last 100,000 hours; the claim is often made with that 15 degrees Celsius or 59 degrees Fahrenheit figure under the L70 standard and if you run them at a temperature any higher, which most people will do, bang - it's a good excuse for a decline of warranty claim and will also ensure that the life of the LED is greatly decreased - and a replacement bought.
  
  Alternatively, given how cheap some of these lights are, you won't even bother with a warranty claim and just chuck the light away. It's an issue that manufacturers are well aware of I'm told and in my opinion, it's a form of green washing.
  
  In environmental terms, this goes beyond just these tiny LED bulbs. There's usually a good deal of plastic and metal housing and perhaps a stand that comes with LED lighting. Millions of these cheap lamps are being sold around the world and given you can't replace the LED's in many these devices, they are bound for landfill much sooner than the purchaser thought they would. Even if the LED's can be replaced, such as the bulbs that work with standard light fittings, it's still a lot of waste.
  
  To date, the best bang for buck I've received from LED's wasn't one of these 28/56 or whatever LED arrangements, but a headlamp with just one Cree LED in it. Although a single LED arrangement, it's been far brighter than any of the multiple LED lights I've had - and maintained its brightness. It cost a bunch more too at the time, but it was money well spent and there will be less waste when it does finally give up the ghost. When I was comparing headlamps, I found the look of it rather weird compared to other models, but the oddness had a purpose that I didn't realize at the time - to allow for more effective heat dissipation.
  
  I think generally speaking, the more you spend on an LED fitting, the better the life you'll get - but don't just take price as a guide. Watch out for the "L70" standard and quiz merchants on a light's ability to dissipate heat. Look for ratings that will be guaranteed under real-world temperature conditions.
  
  By the way, Tim tells me L70 isn't just used with LED lights, but also CFL's at times; which explains why the quality of Compact Fluorescent Lamps and their claimed lifespan vs. actual can vary quite a bit.

    Some of the newest led tech is amazing in that not only do you get lots of light with little heat and power loss but the newest tech is also full spectrum. I think we will see this tech be incorporated from health conscious companies in such uses as back lighting for computer monitors etc. We should be able to get close to sunlight wave lengths in indoor lighting which will reap major benefits to human health.
    
    But of course with all products buyer beware. Know your product so you get what you expect.

      I used to work a lot of nights, and found that my vitamin D levels were dropping in a big way. I asked for full spectrum lighting in my office and lab, and this made a huge difference to my health.
      
      Liquid crystal lighting has been used in sheeting for walls, and even ceilings, and is another new technology to watch.

The light should be of excellent color, with a brightness at least as great as conventional light sources and efficiency at least as great as fluorescent lighting.   Major Advance in Generating Electricity From Wastewater

  Engineers at Oregon State University have made a breakthrough in the performance of microbial fuel cells that can produce electricity directly from wastewater, opening the door to a future in which waste treatment plants not only will power themselves, but will sell excess electricity.
  
  The new technology developed at OSU uses new concepts — reduced anode-cathode spacing, evolved microbes and new separator materials — and can produce more than two kilowatts per cubic meter of liquid reactor volume — 10 to 50 more times the electrical per unit volume than most other approaches using microbial fuel cells, and 100 times more electricity than some.
  
  This technology cleans sewage by a very different approach than the aerobic bacteria used in the past. Bacteria oxidize the organic matter and, in the process, produce electrons that run from the anode to the cathode within the fuel cell, creating an electrical current.
  
  Almost any type of organic waste material can be used to produce electricity — not only wastewater, but also grass straw, animal waste, and byproducts from such operations as the wine, beer or dairy industries.
  
  The researchers say this could eventually change the way that wastewater is treated all over the world, replacing the widely used “activated sludge” process that has been in use for almost a century. The new approach would produce significant amounts of electricity while effectively cleaning the wastewater, they suggest.
  
  “If this technology works on a commercial scale, the way we believe it will, the treatment of wastewater could be a huge energy producer, not a huge energy cost,” said Hong Liu, an associate professor in the OSU Department of Biological and Ecological Engineering. “This could have an impact around the world, save a great deal of money, provide better water treatment and promote energy sustainability.”
  
  
  Experts estimate that about 3 percent of the electrical energy consumed in the United States and other developed countries is used to treat wastewater, and a majority of that electricity is produced by fossil fuels.
  
  The system also works better than an alternative approach to creating electricity from wastewater that is based on anaerobic digestion that produces methane. It treats the wastewater more effectively, and doesn’t have any of the environmental drawbacks of that technology, such as production of unwanted hydrogen sulfide or possible release of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, the researchers believe.
  
  The OSU system has now been proven at a substantial scale in the laboratory, Liu said, and the next step would be a pilot study. A good candidate, she said, might initially be a food processing plant, which is a contained system that produces a steady supply of certain types of wastewater that would provide significant amounts of electricity.
  
  Once advances are made to reduce high initial costs, researchers estimate that the capital construction costs of this new technology should be comparable to that of the activated sludge systems now in widespread use today — and even less expensive when future sales of excess electricity are factored in.
  
  The approach may also have special value in developing nations, where access to electricity is limited and sewage treatment at remote sites is difficult or impossible as a result.
  
  The ability of microbes to produce electricity has been known for decades, but only recently have technological advances made their production of electricity high enough to be of commercial use. OSU researchers reported several years ago on the promise of this technology, but at that time the systems in use produced far less electrical power. Continued research should also find even more optimal use of necessary microbes, reduced material costs and improved function of the technology at commercial scales, OSU scientists said.

  Baking soda - 30 handy tips
  
  My original article on baking soda being an earth friendly household chemical replacement was mainly about what the substance is and how it's made. I also briefly touched on a few useful tips in how the substance can be used, but in this article, I've jotted down a stack of baking soda tips - some of these I've tried myself, others I'm yet to give a whirl.
  
  Special note: always spot test any home concoctions first before going all out. That doesn't just apply to baking soda, but any tips provided on GreenLivingTips.com - or any other site for that matter :).
  
  Kitchen
  
  - A bowl of baking soda in your fridge will help remove excess moisture and absorb odors.
  
  - Sprinkle some in your veggies crisper and cover with a cloth or paper towel for crisper veggies that last longer.
  
  - Sprinkle baking soda onto a damp sponge for cleaning out your refrigerator and benchtops without scratching.
  
  - Dissolve a couple of tablespoons of baking soda in water in a microwave safe bowl, then bring to the boil in your microwave. Allow to sit for a minute or two, then you should easily be able to wipe out any baked on stains, plus your oven will microwave will smell fresher too.
  
  - Sprinkling baking soda in the bottom of rubbish bags will help to control odors as you add trash.
  
  - To give your dishwasher a good clean, run it through a cycle and use baking soda instead of detergent.
  
  - Baking soda can be thrown on stove fires to extinguish the flames. The carbon dioxide generated when the powder burns starves the fire of oxygen.
  
  - Wash chemicals and pesticides off fruits and vegetables in a pot filled with water and 3 - 4 tablespoons of baking soda added.
  
  On a somewhat related note, here's something interesting I came across. Baking soda is sometimes used when boiling vegetables to preserve their color. That practice is not recommended as it destroys the vitamin C content of vegetables.
  General home
  
  - Anywhere that moisture is a problem, such as cupboards under sinks, place a bowl of baking soda to help control humidity. You'll need to occasionally stir the powder for maximum effective life.
  
  - Crayon or texta marks on walls? Try applying baking soda/water paste on an old toothbrush and lightly brush the affected area.
  
  - Water stains on wooden floors can be removed with a sponge dampened in a solution of baking soda dissolved in water.
  
  - Sprinkle some baking soda into your vacuum bag to help reduce musty/pet smells being spread throughout your house when vacuuming.
  
  - Sprinkle baking soda on rugs and carpets before vacuuming as a deodorising treatment. Most carpet powders you buy are baking soda based! Just a brief note on this - not recommended for areas that are very humid as the baking soda may stay in the carpet.
  
  - Mops can really stink out areas where they are stored. If your mop is getting on the nose, don't throw it out, try soaking it in a mixture of 4 tablespoons baking soda and a gallon of water for a while.
  
  - Stains on porcelain sinks, toilets and plastics can be removed by applying a layer of baking soda and then using a damp sponge . I found this to work particularly well on a water stain in a sink that couldn't be shifted otherwise without the use of heavy duty chemicals and scratching the surface.
  
  Plumbing
  
  - As an alternative to caustic soda for clearing blocked drains, throw a cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by a couple of jugs of boiling water.
  
  Garden
  
  - Baking soda can deter ants - pour a solid line in areas of activity and they won't cross it.
  
  - Mix a tablespoon of baking soda, a teaspoon of (earth friendly) dish detergentent and a gallon of water to make a spray for treating roses against black spot fungus.
  
  Laundry
  
  - Work a baking soda and water paste onto stains prior to washing to help remove them from the fabric
  
  - Half a cup of baking soda added to a full load of washing will help brighten your wash and remove odors.
  
  Workshop/auto
  
  - Mix a paste of baking soda and vinegar and apply with a pot scourer to remove light rusting
  
  - A baking-soda/water paste applied to chrome surfaces, allowed to dry then buffed off will leave chrome shining!
  
  - Baking soda applied to fresh grease and oil spills on your garage floor will draw away the oil, which can then be scraped off.
  
  Pets
  
  - Baking soda lightly sprinkled and mixed into cat litter will help control odor.
  
  - Eliminate odor after you've cleaned up pet accidents by sprinkling over the dampened area with baking soda; allow to dry and then vacuum.
  
  Personal
  
  - Whoofy shoes getting you down? Get a couple of old socks, fill up the toe secitions with baking soda, place into the offending shoes and leave overnight to help remove odors.
  
  - A thick paste of baking soda and water applied to bug bites can provide relief.
  
  - A half teaspoon of baking soda mixed into a glass of water can act as mouthwash.
  
  - Sprinkle baking soda onto regular toothpaste to create a whitening toothpaste
  
  Miscellaneous
  
  - To clean jewelry, use a paste of 3 parts baking soda to 1 part water, apply the mixture the piece, allow to sit for a couple of minutes, rinse off and then polish with a soft cloth.
  
  - Sprinkle your Christmas tree with baking soda to mimick snow - a much more environmentally friendly alternative to some of those chemical snow sprays!
  
  With so many uses you'll likely use a lot and buying baking soda in small boxes probably won't be too economical. Have a chat to your local baker who may be able to supply you with larger quantities or try contacting a bakery supplies company as some sell direct to the public.
  
  You can also save money on baking soda by re-using it. For example, once it has served its purpose as a fridge deodoriser you can put it down your sink to help keep your drains clear.
  
  Phew, that's quite a list of baking soda tips - it's such a versatile substance and certainly a greener way to get many jobs around the house done. My list is by no means exhaustive and I'm sure I've missed a bundle of ideas and applications! Please add your own tips below!

    I think the more we come away from fast food supermarkets, and realise that we are able to grow organic, fresh food ourselves, the more control we will have over our health and our lives.
    
    Especially when the household budget may be running low, there will always be a fresh food supply in the backyard or front yard. Purchasing chickens will supply the eggs and pretty much you have all three meals of the day, just outside your door.
    
    I have been on a project this weekend, cleaning up the yard, fixing the chicken fence and planting more veges including white and green cucmber, butternut pumkin, green zucchini and some more roma tomatoes.
    
    I look forward to when its time for picking, not only will the food be delicious and fresh, I know that it hasn't been treated with any chemicals or been sitting for along time in a supermarket.

      Have a look at the posts on seed saving, this will also save you a lot of money, and also help the biodiversity of the planet.
      
      Check out the local seed savers group in your area, swapping seeds can be a lot of fun, you never quite know what you will end up growing :)

        Will do Spud. I’ve just be given some seeds from my friend, locut seeds and lilly pilly seeds. I’m just drying them out at the moment and then will plant them in a small pot to help them along ....

        I will check out to see if my community has a local seed savers group. That would be great to swap. I have a small greenhouse and plan to get that up and going sowing from seeds.

          How To Grow Apple Trees From Seed
          
          Have you ever tried to grow apple trees from seeds collected from an apple? It certainly makes good sense that they would germinate. They are seeds and seeds are supposed to grow, right?
          
          I've heard people say apples seeds collected from apples are hybridized and therefore can't grow because hybrids are sterile.
          
          They are correct in that most commercially grown apples hold hybridized seeds inside. They are probably incorrect that this is the reason why your apple seeds don't germinate.
          
          Bees bring pollen from one tree to the next. If the bee recently visited a delicious apple tree then visits a granny smith apple tree the resulting apples would produce delicious x granny smith seeds.
          
          You might come up with the next award winning apple variety but don't count on it.
          
          These seeds are not going to produce a granny smith or a delicious apple tree. They would produce a tree with mixed genetics.
          
          Granny smith and delicious are hybrids themselves, this means the new seeds would be ploy-hybrid. This doesn't have much to do with viability; the seeds can still be fertile. The myth that seeds collected from hybridized apples are sterile might be caused by the fact that apple seeds need to be stratified before they will germinate. Stratification means the seeds have to be treated with cool temperatures for a certain length of time before they will germinate. Most people probably don't think to stratify their apple seeds. The seeds never germinate hence the idea that they are sterile or infertile.
          
          If you collect seeds from an apple and put them in soil or a terrarium, your apple seeds likely won't germinate for 2 reasons. The seeds need a dry out period followed by a stratification period. If you skip these 2 steps you probably won't have success germinating your apple seeds.
          
          If you want to germinate apple seeds collected from an apple first let the seeds dry out for 3-4 weeks. Set the seeds on a piece of wax paper etc and roll them over every day or 2. After a month or so the seeds lose that dark shine and get a lighter dryer look. This is a good indication the seeds have dried well.
          
          Once the seeds are dry put them in a container or zip lock bag. You can also add soil if you wish. Place the container or bag in your refrigerator for about 3 months.
          
          If you chose to add soil you can moisten the soil after about 10 or 11 weeks. Keep a good watch on the bag and let fresh air in often. You should start to see leaves popping out of the soil in a few weeks if everything went right.
          
          If you didn't choose to add soil you can try to plant the seeds directly into pots or in the ground. If you time it out you can let the seeds dry over the winter and put them into the refrigerator 3 months before the frost usually leaves. Cool weather seems to help apple seeds sprout as well. Commercially grown apple varieties are usually grafted to a wild variety rootstock. The wild variety will be hearty and adapted to the local climate. This method not only produces more apples, without grafting, certain varieties wouldn't be able to grow in certain climates. Grafting allows commercial farmers to produce more varieties in limited opportunity type climates.
          
          This brings another complication into the whole idea of growing cross pollinated apple seeds. You don't know it the new variety you get will be tolerant to you local climate. The tree might simply die off after a winter or 2.
          
          If you do manage to succeed in starting apple trees from seed don't forget to protect them from critters. Rabbits and deer like to eat fruit trees, especially young tender ones. Put up some kind of fence for rabbits and use other defenses against deer etc.
          
          Deer, rabbits and other herbivores have also very likely been the culprits of that mystical apple tree that appeared in your field or at your cabin and in those areas that don't usually get mowed. Animals eat apples and the seeds that pass through these animals can still be viable. I've seen many apple trees spring up in my aunt's horse pasture when I was growing up. We would collect apples from wild trees growing in the woods and feed the scabby ones to her horses in the autumn. The following summer new apple trees would sprout up around the pasture.
          
          A Good time to collect apple seeds is when mom is making an apple pie. Sometimes I eat an apple I think is exceptional and save the seeds. Who knows I might get lucky or I might just have a little fun.
          
          Growing apple trees from commercially grown seeds isn't really a bad thing. It would make a great project if you are interested in seeing what kind of apples you will get. I suggest starting this project at a young age if you want to see the results though.
          
          Another reason to start apples from seed would be for a Science fair project. You could try germinating apple seeds that have been stratified for different periods of time, some that were frozen, some that were never stratified and see which method produced the best results.

  The importance of recycling used engine oil
  Many people are aware that old engine oil shouldn't be dumped, but recycled.
  
  Regardless, up to 100 million litres (approximately 26.4 million US gallons) of the stuff is improperly disposed of each year in Australia alone, according to the Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts.
  
  It's dumped in household trash, used as weed killer, pour in ditches, left laying about or illegally dumped. Actually, I'm feeling rather guilty as I write this as I have a gallon or so of old sump oil stashed away.
  
  Used engine oil is incredibly toxic stuff and a gallon can contaminate one million gallons of water. Pouring it on land doesn't reduce the risk either as it can seep down into the water table as well as rendering the soil incapable of sustaining plant life.
  
  Used oil doesn't wear out - it just gets filthy. It can be cleaned of contaminants and recycled continuously. It can even be cleaned to the point where it can be reused as engine oil.
  
  The dirty oil goes through the same refining process as oil that is extracted from wells. New engine oil made from recycled oil meets the standards used in the industry lubrication industry. According to the American Petroleum Institute, re-refined oil is of as high a quality as a virgin oil product.
  
  The recycling process is as follows:
  
  - Removal of any water
  - Filtering to remove solids and additives
  - De-asphalting to remove bituminous content
  - Distillation
  
  Environmental benefits of recycling used engine oil
  
  Information from the USA Environmental Protection Agency states that re-refining used oil takes only about one-third the energy of refining crude oil to lubricant quality. It takes 42 gallons of crude oil, but only one gallon of used oil to produce a half gallon of new, high-quality lubricating oil that can be used in car engines.
  
  Other uses for recycled engine oil
  
  While the following uses may not be all that "green", it goes to show just how important that this resource is recycled rather than just thrown out. By recycling engine oil, we reduce the need for extraction of crude oil and the associated environmental impacts of that activity.
  
  - Engine oil can also be used as fuel oil. By recycling just two gallons of used oil, it has the energy potential to generate enough electricity to run the average household for almost 24 hours. One gallon of used oil processed for fuel contains about 140,000 British Thermal Units (BTUs) of energy.
  
  - It can be reused as hydraulic oil
  
  - Many petro-chemical based products can be made with it
