Forum dedicated to discussions on Autonomic Nervous System Disorders: Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome POTS / Neurally Mediated Hypotension NMH - recognized as a possible cause of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Both are catergorized as Orthostatic Intolerances (OI) OI is characterized by fatigue, syncope and lightheadedness, and is associated with postural tachycardia and plasma norepinephrine concentrations that are disproportionately high.

Share your story and your experience, ask questions, give answers, support others or get support.

Orthostatic intolerance affects 500,000+ Americans and causes a wide range of disabilities.

The CDC says "Autonomic nervous system dysregulation may account for some cases of chronic fatigue syndrome ( CFS) and this may be manifest as orthostatic intolerance. Several investigators have evaluated the association between orthostatic intolerance and CFS."

Tachycardia is an extremely rapid heart rate, usually a pulse rate over 100 beats per minute (bpm). Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) is clinically defined as a heart rate increase of 30 bpm or more from supine (laying down) to standing position in less than 10 minutes.

The Mayo Clinic defines NMH as causeing blood pressure to drop after standing for long periods, creating symptoms such as nausea, fainting and nausea. It may occur because of a miscommunication between the heart and brain. Standing for extended periods, your blood pressure falls as blood pools in your legs. Normally, your body then makes adjustments to normalize your blood pressure. But in people with NMHthe brain thinks blood pressure is too high, and lessens heart rate, further decreasing blood pressure. More blood pools in the legs and less blood reaches the brain, leading to lightheadedness and fainting.
