An Ontario hospital said it would not press Quebec health authorities to force a three-year-old boy suffering from cancer to receive chemotherapy treatment.
The family has refused chemo, instead opting for alternative treatment.

The hospital expressed concern about the boy's health and referred the case to Quebec's regional youth protection agency, which has declined to intervene.
Marie Belanger, spokeswoman for the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario said it wasn't likely the hospital would take matters to court to force the child to undergo chemotherapy. "I don't think that we're going to forge ahead with any legal recourse," she said.
Anael L'Esperance-Nascimento, from Ripon., Que. north of Ottawa, was diagnosed with cancerous cells in his brain and bone marrow last fall.
He was treated at CHEO but then his parents decided to consider alternative treatment because he wasn't getting better.
Belanger said doctors disapproved of the family's decision to interrupt treatment but were keeping in touch and still providing some level of care.
"We don't jump the gun every time the parent says something we disagree with," Belanger said. "But in this particular case, for reasons that I can't go into, we decided that we disagreed with the course of treatment the family had chosen."
The alternative treatment involves a diet of raw vegetables developed by Florida's Hippocrates Health Institute which "is dedicated to the belief that a pure enzyme-rich diet, complemented by positive thinking and non-invasive therapies, are essential elements on the path to optimum health" according to its web site.
On Saturday some 300 people held a rally at Gatineau,_Que. health food store to raise money for Anael's treatment.
Joining the crowd was Laurie Anne Prince, who says the Hippocrates method helped her beat breast cancer. She has since started giving conferences promoting alternative treatment and a similar diet based on raw vegetables. "It gives the body the tools necessary to fight cancer," said Prince, who adds she dropped using a wheelchair and tests now showed her cancer to be inactive. "I'm not completely healed, but I am healthier, I should be dead," she said.
It's not unusual for families to seek complementary alternative medicines, said Belanger, but this doesn't necessarily mean patients should interrupt hospital treatment.
The child's condition was improving according to reports, but his mom said she would not hesitate to resort to chemotherapy if the current method failed.

The alternative treatment a Quebec family chose for their three-year-old son's cancer treatment may not be the best example of naturopathic medicine according to some naturopathic doctors.

The alternative treatment involves a diet of raw vegetables developed by Florida's Hippocrates Health Institute.
But some naturopathic doctors say the confusion between the many varieties of natural health care often gives naturopathic medicine a bad name.
"Part of the challenge for us is there are a lot of people that do natural medicine, but don't do naturopathic medicine,"said David Lescheid, a naturopathic doctor in Ottawa.
"If we practiced like that and we just used nutrition to treat a kid with cancer, we would lose our licence," said Mr. Lescheid.
The extensive licensing system for naturopathic doctors involves eight years of post-secondary schooling. Student need pre-requisites similar to that of medical schools to enter an accredited naturopathic college.
"We're looking for evidence-based research. It's not like we throw on our cauldron," said Jill Shainhouse, about one of the myths of alternative health care.
Ms. Shainhouse is a naturopathic doctor who specializes in oncology at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto.
"Some naturopathic doctors are very conventional and they treat in a very biochemical matter by giving a dose of therapeutic vitamins, minerals or other supplements," said Ms. Shainhouse, who treats her patients with intravenous vitamin C.
Both naturopathic doctors say they prefer to work with medical doctors for a holistic approach to health care.
"The college doesn't dismiss conventional care," said Ms. Shainhouse. "No one would ever discourage a patient from having chemotherapy or radiation therapy." Mr. Lescheid said conventional methods and the naturopathic methods are often used in tandem in the treatment of aggressive forms of cancer.
Neither doctor disputes the importance of diet, but they are apprehensive about endorsing the treatment, arguing it alone cannot cure disease.
"What they're trying to do is create an environment where these cancer cells will no longer uncontrollably divide. You hear amazing testimonials," said Mr. Lescheid about diet-based treatments, "but we'd never say it's the sole way to treat someone."

An 11-year-old boy whose parents won court approval to treat their son's leukemia with an unconventional method has died after five years of fighting the cancer.
Noah Maxin died Thursday at Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital in Cleveland, said Rinda Schelat of Reed Funeral Home in Canton.
Noah's parents, Greg and Theresa Maxin, won the right in 2002 to abandon chemotherapy treatment for their then-7-year-old son. County child welfare officials had accused the couple of neglect after the Maxins told Akron Children's Hospital they were pulling Noah out of chemotherapy three months into a 3 1/2-year treatment plan.
The couple said they were concerned about the long-term effects chemotherapy would have on Noah, whose cancer had gone into remission.
After researching alternative treatments, they found a doctor specializing in holistic medicine who recommended a healthier diet along with supplements to boost Noah's immune system.
The parents put him back on chemotherapy after the cancer returned four months later.

But what is your point or the point of the story? Do we give credit to alternative health for keeping him alive for five years? Condemn chemo for failing to save him after the cancer returned?
Or do we condemn natural health because his cancer returned?
If so, then we must doubley condemn chemo and mainstream medicine for all the cancers that return during their treatments and for all of their leukemia and other cancer patients that last less than five years, right?

This is a reply to # 927,862I followed this story too. It is sad, but I could find no details of just what therapy they were using and that is a very important issue. They make it sound like they were only using vegetarian diet and not any herbs or other therapies. Hind sight is always 20 20, but prehaps they should have taken him to Mexico.

This is a reply to # 927,904Perhaps they should have put him on a protocol that included more than just diet and included proven anti-cancer supplements. Relying on any single one natural element is foolish - the more bullets you have in your gun, the better your odds of winning the fight. There are a lot of good natural anti-cancer bullets out there that you do not have to go to Mexico to obtain and make use of.

This is a reply to # 927,979I had a feeling you would flinch when I said that.
I understand that going to Mexico should not be necessary...but it is a Mecca for alternative treatments and the information about them is there. In the words of Wade Frazier, in the chapter of his essay called "The Cancer Racket",
"How free are we in the United States.....? Mexican citizens enjoy far more freedom in choosing their cancer treatments than Americans do. How can Americans choose their cancer treatment when they are not even aware of the alternatives, and if they are ever mentioned, it is usually in the context of its practitioners being jailed and demonized?"
This is highly speculative of course, but his parents might have been savy enough to use diet, but not savy enough to know what else to do and were being guided by someone who was overly confident or also didn't know about things like Oleander and 714X either.

This is a reply to # 928,127You got me - I DID flinch! But your points are valid. Mexico is a mecca for alternative treatments. Scams too unfortunately. I think that, despite the evil empire's efforts, there has been increasing access to information and actual therapies inside the country in recent years. Some of the better known treatments are still pretty much banished as far as actual clinics, but there are a lot of protocols you can do yourself. Supplements too. One example is oleander. Until a few years a go, you had to go to the Salud Integral clinic in Honduras just to get the medicine, or else Mexico. Now you can get it delivered by Fed Ex without ever leaving home, and there is an oleander supplement you that keeps making it in as well. Or you can make the home version yourself. That is just one example, of course, but it is my favorite and the one I know best.

This is a reply to # 927,944I would say that the obvious first answer to your question is BECAUSE IT IS A DRUG! Perhaps they did not wish to subject their son to the side effects of Gleevac or any other cancer drug. Gleevac side effects include:
- Fluid retention
- Swelling in tissues
- Fluid in the lungs
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
- Muscle cramps
- Bleeding
- Changes in the blood counts
- Decreased liver function
They may also have known that the Gleevac success rates for their son's particular kind of cancer may have been much, much less than 99% - and, while Gleevac may have had 90 plus percent "positive response" rates in some trials, nowhere does it say that Gleevac has an actual cure rate of 99%.
In fact, the Journal of the National Cancer Institute reported this year that:
"Although complete hematologic remission rates occur in more than 95% of patients, only a minority enter a molecular remission in which BCR–ABL is undetectable by polymerase chain reaction. In acute phase, characterized by an increase of immature blast cells in the peripheral blood, only about 70% of patients have a clinical response, and most of them relapse within a few months."
Nowhere in the story can I find what kind of cancer or leukemia the boy had. CML or AML? Or another of the 12 major forms of Leukemia? The high results reported for Gleevac apply to early stage CML and may not apply to other forms of leukemia. Skeptics have countered that "the simple genetics of CML created an ideal situation for this kind of therapy--one mutation, one mutant protein, one drug target--while most cancers are more complex medleys of mutations"

Also I could not find what stage his cancer was in - crucial information in most instances. According to the FDA:
Gleevec has been show to produce responses in 31% of patients in blast phase and 93% of patients in the chronic phase who are not responding to interferon. Gleevec specifically targets the mutation that is characteristic of CML leukemic cells, and although remissions are very likely, the long-term durable remission rate and cure rate is uncertain.

In the final analysis, all cancer drugs are poisons. Taking them is making a very shaky bet that somehow you will poison the cancer more than you poison your own body and that you will not later die as a result of the damage you have caused by ingesting something nature never intended to be placed in your body.

I knew that they did not mention the type, so I just went by the fact it was Leukemia. My guess is not what you said, but probably that they were not told about it. Gleevec has side effects, but they are generally not that bad. I look at Ryan O'Neal and know for a fact how great Gleevec is. If I had Leukemia, I would do some natural things, but for sure I would take Gleevec. The guy who invented it should get the Nobel prize, if not for the cure, at least for sneeking it by the AMA.

This is a reply to # 928,055I know of it's limits in the type of Leukemia. Gleevec is an excellent drug. It has high rates of success. Beyond that, people need to change their lifestyle, of course. Gleevec is like paradise compared to chemo and radiation. We are very very lucky to have such a drug available and I know big pharma and the FDA were totally blindsided by it's integration into mainstream medicine. I bet they were shaking their heads and thanking God it only cures one type of cancer and I bet they vowed to never let that happen again. Yes, there are natural things, but sometimes they don't work and much of the time people don't know about them and/or they trust the drs. So, it is just awesome that it is available, because it has saved many lives, for one, Ryan O'Neal, whom I have been a fan of since the early 70s.

My 17 year old son was dx with CML at age 12 and thanks to Gleevec is living a normal live. The problem is he is on a high dose and the monthly cost is 5615.30. Since I have an HSA through my employer I see what my employer (not insurance) is paying every month. My son has to take the medication for life and $67383.36 annually is a sizable financial burden on any budget. This additional cost my employer pays because of my employment make me question our employer based approach to providing health insurance. There has to be a better solution.
Another thing I worry about is what happens in a few years when he is no longer eligible to be on my policy? In Ohio we do not have a high risk pool for individual like him so his only choice is to work for an employer that offers health insurance benefits. It is amazing how the drug that is keeping him alive is also causing his parents an incredible amount or anxiety because of the tremendous ongoing cost of treatment.

Despite the FDA and other government entities assuming powers they do not constitutionally have, our country was founded on the principals that the we as individuals have the supreme power and that the local, state and federal governments have only the powers that we the people grant them. In all too many instances, that has meant that government has assumed any and all powers that citizens do not rise up and protest against.
Given the government's record of siding with the monied interests in our foods, our medicines and industrial polluters why should they be trusted to determine what is best for someone's child? If things were the way they should be, and our heath and welfare took precedent over profits, then natural health, actual cures and prevention would be the treatments of choice and dangerous drugs and managed illness would be the outsiders.
If such were the case, and we had not been brainwashed with over a century of lies about the real truth of nature versus man-made medicines, I wonder what the out cry would be if the government attempted to take someone off of natural treatment and force them into chemo, which has an overall cure rate of 3% when you get past the lies and statistical manipulations? This is a reply to # 928,447Maybe true on property tax, but if you take up the offer I made to all Curezone members for a free copy of Aaron Russo's film on DVD "America - Freedom to Fascism" you will find that you don't legally owe any income tax!
Sounds nuts, but it is absolutely true - there is no law anywhere that compels anyone to pay income tax, as the film proves.

This is a reply to # 928,457When you sign your childs birth certificate its a contract with the government, which gives Child and family services control of your child! When you sign a marriage license its a contract with the goverment and must hire a state sanctioned lawyer for divorce or any disputed issues! When you buy a car the document of its origin of manufacture is sent to the goverment and you sign it over when you buy the license plates and registration, the goverment owns half your car ! Its to bad they dont pay for half the maintenance! You dont own the property your house is on you only own the house this is why you need to have building permits and pay property taxes or rent on the property to place any permanent type structure of any kind on the property and you have a real estate title not a property title! If you hire a lawyer you are a ward of the state! These laws where all passed through county state or federal goverment angencies and of course they all violate the constitution! See what can happen while you are asleep! The Government owns you, lock stock and barrel! Bu it is true about federal taxes, the 16th amendment has never been ratified!

i know it's true, heard about it years ago. even matt lesco says it is true. i heard of a guy who did it once and went to jail. i believe my parents have a friend who does it and he is on the run all the time. his family never knows where he is. you have to be pretty good to get away with it and not let stress worry you, i imagine. i know taxes are voluntary, but the gov't says that and then says to pay them anyway, regardless.

This is a reply to # 928,527If you watch the Russo film you will find that it is more than just the 16th amendment issue. Literally, there is no law on the books that says you have to pay income tax. The IRS will not talk about it, nor will they show you the law. They cannot show you the law, because there is none - as IRS agents admit to in the film. Now they will still may try to throw you in jail, and sometimes succeed. As the film shows, other times they lose.
Our country is governed by two sets of law. There is constitutional law, and there is a form of corporate law where the UNITED STATES (note the ALL CAPS denoting a corporate entity) operates under the color of law, but it is not real law. Tax courts operate under the color of law - and, as the film demonstrates, usually will not allow the United States constitution to be brought up, because the courts are not constitutional.
