Almost every year when I bring in my hybiscus plants from the garden, insects come with it. Quarantining them for a few days and spraying with organic soap or diluted hydrogen peroxide slightly delays the problem, but does not solve it. Last year I threw out half my houseplants because they were infested with mealybugs, and chopped down the hybiscus after blooming had stopped, usually around this time of year. This year the house is full of tiny little black flies which look like fruitflies to me. Maybe they come from the hybiscus blossoms? ( One plant is still blooming, the other got chopped down already)
How do I get rid of these critters in an "organic" way? I have put out little trays of water to drown them, which does work well, but they seem to breed quicker than I manage to drown them.
What do I do next year? Throw out the hybiscus? I do love them...
