I had herpes zoster too, something like 2 months ago, as it was an ofthalmic form I had to take the anti-viral tablets because it is a very dangerous and painful type of h.z. I think I got it because I lacked of sleep.
Besides the drug I did everything I could think of, and in a week luckily it was all gone. In Scandinavia they sell Zverthylle extract, that has strong anti-viral properties but is totally natural, I don't know if you have something similar in US, I had also that one together with the normal tablets. Then I took plenty of Echinacea, hardly ate anything but juices (many many), had many alkalizing drinks (I like the recipe of Lapis), I treated the rush with many fresh leaves of my plant of aloe, I tried also with urine (but the rush was almost getting infected...), and stayed for 3 days in complete darkness (that was because of the eyes). After the first week I had real tons of blueberries, as my grandmother has always told me how good they are for the eyes, and here frozen blueberries cost (almost) nothing.
The idea is that the stronger your immunitary system is the better it fights shingles. Children who have shingles suffer much less that oldies, that is because their body react more effectively. So, given that your wife is where she is now in terms of general health, you can still boost her immunitary system in many ways. I used the things I listed because they were the easiest for me, but you have plenty of choices. Rest and diet before everything.
Good luck!
ah! another thing, for the pains I used the boul of hot water, it relaxed the nerves a bit, but keep it far from the rush.
