Duct tape no magical cure for warts, study finds

WASHINGTON - Duct tape does not work any better than doing nothing to cure warts in schoolchildren, Dutch researchers reported on Monday in a study that contradicts a popular theory about an easy way to get rid of the unattractive lumps.
The study of 103 children aged 4 to 12 showed the duct tape worked only slightly better than using a corn pad, a sticky cushion that does not actually touch the wart and which was considered to be a placebo.
"After six weeks, the warts of eight children (16 percent) in the duct tape group and the warts of three children (6 percent) in the placebo group had disappeared," the researchers wrote in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.
They said this difference was not statistically significant.
In addition, some of the children who wore duct tape reported itching, rashes and other effects, although none of the children who wore corn pads did.
The researchers, led by Dr. Marloes de Haen of Maastricht University, expressed disappointment with their findings.
Warts are caused by a virus in the skin, and often clear up on their own. They can also be frozen off in a treatment called cryotherapy, or burned off chemically using a strong formulation of salicylic acid.
"Considering the serious discomfort of cryotherapy and the awkwardness of applying salicylic acid for a long time, simply applying tape would be a cheap and helpful alternative, especially in children," de Haen's team wrote.
In 2002, Dr. Dean Focht of Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington and colleagues reported in the same journal that using duct tape on warts worked better than cryotherapy.
The idea of using duct tape to treat warts quickly became common wisdom and is advocated widely on the Internet.
The Dutch researchers said that Focht's team did not actually examine their patients to determine if the warts had disappeared, but called them on the telephone to ask.

I just saw that TV spot where they talk of alternate cures and they were still saying YES! it works", but who do we believe?
This study was done by a Dutch group, but were they connected to a pharmaceutical company?
Anyhow, I think that duct tape is toxic, almost all adhesives are, some have toulene, a cancer risk.
Has anyone really given H2O2 (Hydrogen-Peroxid) or Colloidal Silver a try on warts? I don't have any warts so I cant test it.... but there is not really any downside to thse two wonderful "natural" cures.- Re: Duct tape no magical cure for wa... MatrixV

Hi,
I've not tried to use Colloidal Silver on the wart. I drink it now and again, but that didn't kill the wart. Perhaps a regimen of it everyday for quite a while might be effective and using pads soaked in Colloidal Silver taped to the wart. After all, warts are just viruses, however stubborn they may be.
I used hydrogen peroxide to get rid of my wart. (it was quick, i don't have a huge amount of patience with a regimen) I think i read about it on here somewhere - if you did a search, you'd probably find the original poster's instructions. But basically you just dab it on and it kills the wart off, you file the part that's dead off and dab again.
Careful where you put it though, as it can burn skin and leave a scar.
Its been a couple of months so far and no regrowth. Fingers crossed the little bugger stays away!!

MoreThis is a reply to # 818,107I'm going to have to agree with this. I have been using duct tape and Colloidal Silver for a couple of warts. One was tiny and under my fingernail. I haven't had it long and the silver seems to have killed it off. The other I've had for twenty years or so. I used to bit the thing off for years when it was small. A couple years ago I started trying to freeze it off with the over the counter stuff. Well that only tuned it into a monstrosity. So recently I've mostly been using duct tape on it. it definitely was doing something. The other day I felt it was gone so I haven't had the tape on. Low and behold it was coming back. I've been getting into oxygen therapy and the other day took a hydrogen peroxide bath with food grade H2o2 (make sure you research this before trying). When I was done the wart seemed to be whiter and kind of dead. So I put two and two together and came up with five. But that's another story. Any rate, I have just CAREFULLY put a drop on this thing and it is burning it off and it seems to be raising up out of the skin. Definitely stinging. The thing is I believe it's not just burning but the H2o2 is releasing oxygen and killing it at the same time. Thoughts on that?
I would say this is probably what they are using in this product. Which I'm sure costs much, much more.

This is a reply to # 835,068FYI My 15 year old daughter had a Plantar Wart imbedding into her Right great toe for over 1 and 1/2 years (it started out as a speck which we thought was just an embedded splinter or one of those hard to find fine silver splinters from some weeds). After trying various forms of wart removal compounds and patches, it began to spread to other toes as well.
We got serious and used green banana peels... We taped a piece of the peel over the wart and left it on for 24 hours before changing to a new piece. Before placing the new piece she cut off the now white skin (old wart) and put a new patch on. After 3 days the wart was totally removed and hasn't come back in 1 year. We pray it never does either. We liked this best as it wasn't associated with any pain.Advertisement

This is a reply to # 773,130After just reading the results of this study it sounds kind of half assed. First of all the kids are too young to have as a reliable study group. It sounds like they told them to put duct tape on their warts, then six weeks later they called up and asked if their wart was gone. Who knows if the kids even really kept the tape on enough. I noticed mine seemed to start coming back as soon as it was exposed to the air again. I think maybe the tape smothers the thing. Then the kids are reporting rashes and itching all by phone. What kind of study is that? Sounds like some dude from the local hardware store swung by with a roll of duct tape and collected some numbers for the follow up call then alerted the media.- Re: Duct tape no magical cure for wa... hannahb

I just tried this for a wart on my back that I couldn't reach. Had a really really kind friend who stuck some duct tape on. After 1 week the wart seemed squished down (not suprising since the duct tape had held it down) but then, after 2 weeks there seemed to be a brown/black streak down the side of it (or so my friend told me).
I was fed up by that time - the thing poked out and was big! - so I decided to give my friend's cure a try - and she cut the wart off for me. She said that a wart on her leg had gone away that way. She kept nicking it shaving until it didn't show up any more (this wasn't a planned nick, more of a mistake that had a good result!). But mine still hasn't come back. I would guess you ned to get to the root of the wart (like with plantar warts). But I've also heard that just thinking nasty thoughts at a wart will make it go away too!
