I have been sprouting lentils, etc., in mason jars this summer/fall.
Here's how you do it...
Materials:
1
quart mason jar
ring top for jar [the disk/lid is not needed]
panty hose remnant [large enough to more than cover the top of the jar]
dry lentils/seeds
water
How ya do it:
-place lentils in the jar [fill to a depth of about 1 inch]
-fill the jar with water about 2/3 full
-cover mouth of jar with panty hose and screw the ring lid over them so the material is tight but not too tight
-let sit overnight -- mine usually sit on the kitchen counter, back in a dark corner, but placing them in a cupboard will work just as well... as long as it is room temp and not in direct sunlight [lentils will swell to more than double their size]
-next morning, leave the lid on and turn jar upside down over sink
-drain the water out [you will have to grab the fabric in the center and push it in and out of the mouth of the jar to break the surface tension of the water so it can pass through the fabric]
-rinse the lentils through the fabric and drain again [you will have to push the panty hose down in a bit to let the water in]
-roll the jar around so that some of the lentils stick to the sides of the jar
-set aside [not in direct sunlight] for another 12-24 hrs.
-rinse occasionally [every 4-6 hours or when/if they begin to look dry]
when the root and sprout begin to form, eat up!
put the jar in the frig to slow down the growth
I keep two or three of these going at a time and it works just fine
my friends have a sprouter which they get too busy and frustrated to use and all it seems to do is take up space.
Also, this jar method keeps you in touch with the whole growing process where with self-watering sprouters, you don't really need to look in on them. They can sometimes get out of hand and grow too much leaving them bitter... again, a lesson from my friends.
Maybe this will work for you too...
Let me know.
Take care and may the sprout be with you;-)
