This is a very interesting topic. These issues have been of great interest to a large number of people since ancient times.

To understand how reincarnation or transmigration of the person occurs, we must first understand the nature of the person, what the person actually is.

Unfortunately, the Science of the nature of the eternal living entity appears to have been lost in time. But, actually it has been handed down through the ages from teacher to student in a system called "disciplic succession". The process of attaining real knowledge of the self is hearing from a pure source. The knowledge must come from a person who is free of the four defects that plague a "conditioned soul", which are ... imperfect senses, tendancy to be illusioned, tendancy to cheat, and to make mistakes.

These differences between a "conditioned soul" and a "liberated soul", render the conditioned soul incapable of delivering truth.

Obviously, a vision of reality devoid of understanding of the actual workings of nature will be frustrating and incomplete. Luckily we can find this in many places to varying degrees. My favourite starting place to find answers is in the Vedas. These ancient texts were written in antiquity by liberated souls, and can be found in english translations now. The best starting point in my humble opinion is "Bhagavad-Gita, As It Is" by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami. I acquired a copy of this 13 years ago and I must say that there are NO questions left unanswered.

TRANSLATION

Never was there a time when I did not exist, nor you, nor all these kings; nor in the future shall any of us cease to be.

SYNONYMS

dehinah -- of the embodied; asmin -- in this; yatha -- as; dehe -- in the body; kaumaram -- boyhood; yauvanam -- youth; jara -- old age; tatha -- similarly; deha-antara -- of transference of the body; praptih -- achievement; dhirah -- the sober; tatra -- thereupon; na -- never; muhyati -- is deluded.

TRANSLATION

As the embodied soul continuously passes, in this body, from boyhood to youth to old age, the soul similarly passes into another body at death. A sober person is not bewildered by such a change.
