Hello :) You're in a tough position, I know. Your
Acne may very well have a lot to do with hormones (since you're at that age). I'm sure you feel frusterated when you feel there's a lack of concern over your problem from your mother/parents but they may see it as a "normal" teenage problem. I'm sure they really do feel there is a lack of money to deal with this issue as well. Fortunately, you may in the long run be better off having not seen a dermatologist. I'm not saying that dermatologist don't know a lot about skin diseases/conditions, I am just saying that most (not all) dermatologists are busy and have no way of knowing what causes YOUR acne. Everyone is different, and dermatologist pretty much all do the same things. They will prescribe you Retin-A or
Antibiotics (or both) and probably tell you to buy some Cetaphil or other basic drug-store face wash and wash twice a day, yadda yadda yadda. They may even suggest getting on a low-dose birth control to balance out your hormones and menstral cycle. Every once-in-awhile
Antibiotics will work but usually it is only a temporary fix and many times the
Acne comes back with a vengeance. Retinoids (Vit A) in the form of Retin-A, Differin, or Avita may be prescribed as well. These can work miracles for some people. If they did nothing they wouldn't be used so often but if you ever use Retin-A start with a low strength (like .025%) and start using every other night for a week and then move to every night under a light moisturizer. Retinoids can have some side-effects such as slight burning/sensitivity, redness, peeling, dryness, and photo-sensitivity (making your skin more sensitive to the sun) so don't use it during the day. (I have found some for sale on the internet even though it is prescription only. Not promising this will fix everything, just letting you know that this is probably what a derm would prescribe. However, if you have very inflammed
Acne - if your face is already sensitive and red - retinoids may not be the best thing for you) As far as
Antibiotics , now that I know better, I try to avoid taking them unless absolutely necessary as they lower your natural immune system because they build up a temporary "fake" immune system and while they are killing off bad bacteria in your body, they are also killing off good bacteria. If there is a natural store or vitamin store near where you live, or if there is a small natural section in your neighborhood grocery store, buy a small bottle of Organic Apple Cider Vinegar. A common brand that is good is called BRAGG. The smallest bottle should be fairly cheap (under 5 bucks). If you don't keep any purified water in your house, buy a bottle of distilled water (also really cheap). Buy a bad of Real Cotton Balls (make sure it says Pure Cotton so they are not synthetic). Find the cheapest bottle of aspirin that you can (you want aspirin that is not coated or is lightly coated). If you are allergic or sensitive to taking aspirin - Do Not do this!! Everything I have listed you should be able to purchase for around 12 dollars. This should all last you a really long time as well. These items will make you a toner and a mask. Do not wash your face with soap. Use a face cleanser. Use one that does not have added fragrance or color. If you do not have any at home or cannot afford a higher-quality (like Zenmed or similar treatment cleanser), then you may have to buy something from the drug store so just get something simple like Cetaphil gentle wash or Purpose. Try to find something non-drying as well. You are going to wash your face with cleanser ONCE a day. Yep. Only once. At night, before bed. If you wear make-up, at night wash your face once briefly (Use hands only and don't scrub too hard) with cleanser to get the make-up off. Rinse, and then wash a second time to really clean the face. You can either use the same cleanser for both washes or use a creamier cleanser the first time to emulsify the make-up, then rinse and use another cleanser for the main wash. Rinse WELL and pat dry. Find a little bottle or something (make sure it's clean) to mix 1/3rd Apple Cider Vinegar and 2/3rds distilled water. This is your toner. If you happen to have pure Witch Hazel in your house, you can add a little of that too. Toner is used after cleansing and before moisturizing. Use a little of this mixture on a cotton ball and wipe entire face, neck, chest, whatever. This will not only remove any soap residue/dirt but it will bring your skin back to a proper PH, skin should be a little on the acid side of the scale, about 5.5 Not only is the Cider Vinegar acidic, which helps bring back the PH of the skin and helps fight bacteria, but it naturally contains many important vitamins and minerals. (It is good to drink it as well if you can stomach the taste - mix about 2 tablespoons with about 6
oz. of water and a little honey and it's great for ya! Don't drink it alone as it will be too acidic for your stomach.)
For a weekly mask, get a small glass, put in 2 aspirin tablets, and pour in about 5 drops of Apple Cider Vinegar and about 5-10 drops distilled water. The aspirin should start disolving. After a minute it should be a runny mixture with very small aspirin granules. The smell will be strong and may irritate the eyes so be careful. Spread this over your face, it may burn or sting a little. If it stings too badly just rinse it off right away. If you feel okay, leave this on for 10 minutes and then rinse under slightly warm water. First, get it wet and VERY gently rub around with your fingertips (this is also a scrub) but rub like your are cleaning a butterfly wing. Really. After you do this for about 30 seconds, rinse with slightly warm water and pat dry. Your skin will probably be splotchy red for about 5-10 minutes after you do this. Also, whenever you wash your face, do NOT use hot water. Use slightly warm water, you'll get used to it. Do your best not to pick, I know it's hard. If you really need to, do it right after a shower when your skin is softer and your hands are clean. Get a soft tissue and gently press around the blemish. Tone afterward. Using figernails and squeezing too hard will cause scarring. In the mornings, just splash face with lukewarm water, pat dry, then use the toner. No need to wash with cleanser. Then apply your sun protection or whatever you use. There is a natural oil you could probably get away with using on your face. It's called Emu Oil and it does not clog pores, and it has natural anti-bacterial properties. This may be a good alternative to a moisturizer for you. Just look up pure Emu oil on the internet and you'll find many brands. If you can, get some Zinc as well (take it as directed on bottle -no more). Good luck to you! Keep us updated :)
