You gotta hand it to Cheney et al. for the elegant simplicity of their plan: invade and conquer Iraq (using whatever excuse is convenient, like Wolfowitz admitted), and then declare all business contracts made with the former regime to be null and void, because doing business with tyrants is, of course, immoral! Any country that held such a contract should have known better. Presto: the US (and UK) get all the new contracts, because they happen to be there, running the country.
(Likewise, Halliburton gets awarded the biggest contracts, because its man Cheney happens to be there, running the country. Campaign contributions are investments, of course.)
The other UN bigshots, like France, Germany, and Russia, hotly opposed the war, so why would they want so badly to help with the postwar mess, rather than sitting back with smug satisfaction as America gets what it deserves? It's because they are sorely missing their lucrative Iraqi trade deals, canceled by the US military and now destined instead for American companies. Bush and Co. would not consider for an instant letting them in on the action, except that they are feeling the election-year heat every time an American soldier gets killed.
So now they are negotiating behind closed doors. Wouldn't you love to listen in on that? How many lives is the Russian government willing to sacrifice to get Iraq's debt to Russia reinstated? How many French soldiers will be traded, and for what?
