Sorry, for got about the fist question (it is rather late). There are many causes from emotional to physical and spiritual ones. Digestive problems, though, are the leading causes. When the digestive system becomes a source of toxin production, the toxins overstimulate the nervous system and prevent it from fucntioning in a balanced fashion. Going to bed way after Pitta type has started (10pm)is another cause of insomnia (see my book Timeless Secrets of Health & Rejuvenaation). Proteins eaten in act as nerve toxins and over stimulate the body as well. Of course medical drugs are toxic, interfere with basic hormonal cycles and stimulate the immune and nervous systems. Not making enough time for oneself is another cause. Most everythign that can make you ill in life, can also affect your sleep.
