If memory serves, something to do with failed prophecies about the last things, end times, etc. Seems to be characterisitic of gifted servants of God. Richard Wurmbrandt and Samuel Doctorian (inter alia) went the same way. They claim special revelations, visions, etc., and when they fail, their followers drift away. It's an old story, but surprisingly resilient.
I never trust a guy who talks out of the corner of his mouth. But slightly more seriously, ok, I shoudda been just a bit more precise in my choice of words - most of their followers invariably drift away. Remember that guy who scammed his followers' life savings out of them, then refused to refund them when his 'prophecies' flopped? I wonder how many followers he has now?
On the other hand, SDA's started off with a failed prophecy, and I believe they're still going strong. And how many failed predictions can be pinned on JW's? Simply put, there's no accounting for the depths to which human folly or gullibility will sink.
Speaking of which, did you know that the word 'gullible' is not in the dictionary?
They hafta say that, coz they know that if the test of a true prophet was applied to them (as in Deut. 18:22 and Jer. 28:9), they would be exposed for what they really are - false prophets. So they'd rather you didn't make such a big deal about all the times they get it wrong, which is pretty much all the time. The jury is still out on maybe a couple of them, but if I were a betting man........
I was referring to the guy in the title screen.
Apologies. Got my snickers in a twixt. Yeah, that's the one:

We have an old saying over here: a fool and his money are easily parted. A bit harsh, but a lorra truth in there.
Your family friend is a stark illustration of its devastating consequences, and a salutary warning to others. Meanwhile, Camping is laughing all the way to the bank - until he is compelled to give an account of his actions on 'that day'.
Sure would not wish to be in his shoes when that last trumpet sounds. If he was a true Christian, he would repent of his evil, reimburse everbody he defrauded and beg their forgiveness, then God's.
Any sign of that so far? No, didn't think so.
