Hi my name is Anthony. I have been suffering with exfoliative cheilitis since I was a child and I am 32 now. I've been a registered nurse for 8 years. I have been ghosting this forum since I was 15 waiting for a possible cure. I'm pretty convinced in my situation there is no cure but I have found the best treatment for myself thus far. CALENDULA ointment!! It was mentioned from someone else so I gave it a shot. I bought it from a nutrition shop for $8.00 USD. It has calmed the inflammation and my lips don't feel numb. My lips still peel but when they do peel after a shower I don't observe trauma which is a big contributor to inflammation and irritation. The ointment also does not macerate the skin or make it soggy. I used to use Tacrolimus and Hydrocortisone everyday which helped I still had many flares. Those medications also can have many potential unwanted side effects. Tacrolimus made my lips burn and could increase cancer risk. Plus we all know how bad oral and topical steroids can be to our bodies. I feel like I am free of most burdens of cheilitis! It still requires management and it is important to not self inflict pain on ourselves by rubbing vigorously and picking at our lips. I can for the most part talk normally and I am comfortable with my appearance on a day to day basis. Before I always dreaded that the next day would be a bad day for my lips. I do not have that anxiety anymore. I was never born with anxiety and grew up in an environment that made me confident. Cheilitis took those things away from me. My friends I know how debilitating this condition can be. Everyone should try this ointment. Again I am not cured but I am happy with the management. I surf, I stay out in the sun, and I eat what I want. I am not afraid of water. I apply the Calendula ointment about 4 times a day. The best that we can expect is to deal with the things we can not control and this is a chronic disorder. Feel free to ask me any questions! I will be checking in daily for the next week.
