My teeth are so much whiter, even though I've done nothing different in the way I take care of my teeth.
What changed was my saliva PH!
My teeth were the last of my toxic dump story to actually improve. During my illness, they were extremely glassy and porous.
My saliva PH was 4.8 so my teeth were literally dissolving in acid instead of being re-mineralized (7.2 PH).
Before CF, I always had compliments on my super white teeth. But after CF, they just seemed to get worse and worse. I was scared that I might actually lose them.
But even if I didn't, they were just SO porous that they were constantly stained. (I purposely stopped showing my teeth when I smiled.) And as I started eating even more highly pigmented foods (blackberries, pomegranates, green veggie juice, beets ect.) my teeth just became even more stained!
I was doing everything that I normally would do to take care of them. But it was like they were sponges soaking up every color that I ate.
And the weirdest part is my mouth always felt dirty. Without healthy saliva (7.2), food and bacteria create a gross covering on my teeth. (When I had perfect teeth and saliva, my teeth were always slick and shiny).
Our alkaline saliva is SO important!
I had grey areas in my front teeth- the enamel was so thin!
They are back to normal...ALMOST. My bottom canine is turned. It wasn't like that before my PH started dropping. My jaw bone actually lost volume, crowding this tooth. This only took a few years to happen.
I'm hoping that this tooth will turn back to it's natural position. Now that would be exciting- straight teeth without braces!
So here's my warning:
Everyone wants white teeth. And many are using bleach to do it. But more often than not, the teeth feel more sensitive. This means that the enamel is getting thinner. The teeth will get grey areas the more you bleach, making them more porous, and stained! It's a lose-lose situation.
However, the more solid (less porous) your teeth are, the whiter they will become. Just keeping them clean will remove surface stains.
It just makes sense that working on your overall health, becoming alkaline and oxygenated, and detoxing acids out, not only will make you look young and gorgeous, but it will also lead to beautiful teeth!
