There isn't any heaven---or hell, for that matter. I remember lots of past lives and the in betweens and first just after you die, if you've been deliberately abusive, those folk's spirits are waiting to share the pain they experienced at your hand with you.
If you were particularly vile, it can take some time. Some of my earliest lives were as a mercenary, so I had some of those. It really sucked. You couldn't even die to escape it. So hell was an easy sell, because most young spirits go thru that and unconsciously have a sense memory of it.
But if you've lived a non-abusive life, you'll just wander up to the higher plane and meet with other of the spirit group you're traveling with across time; catch up on stuff and everything. Then you wander over to meet with your higher self (the part of you who is always out there), and do a evaluation of the life just past. Look for what you learned, and what you still need/want to learn and find the next life that might provide those learning opportunities.
It's never condemnation or judgement (the spirits sharing their pain is as close to that as it ever gets) and then, when you're ready, off you go, on to the next life. And even if it seems you took 20 years to get ready, there's no time out there, so you can reincarnate the very next day here, if you want. Most do because it keeps their learning flow smoother and keeps them in time sync with their fellow travelers.
I don't remember eating though, I think it's one of the reasons people like to reincarnate, cuz they can do stuff like that again. I don't remember missing it while I was out there though, just as I was heading back--kinda like oh yeah, that's right! I get to eat and drink again.
