How can Jesus be both God and the Son of God?
Jesus can be both God and the son of God because the terms don't mean the same thing. When we say that Jesus is God (John 1:1, 14; Colossians 2:9; Hebrews 1:8), we are saying that Jesus possesses the divine nature (as well as a human nature, see hypostatic union). But the term "Son of God" does not mean that Jesus is not God. Think about it. If the term "Son of God" meant that Jesus is not God, then does the term "Son of Man" mean that Jesus is not a man? Of course not. Likewise, if the term "Son of Man" means that Jesus is a man, then does it not imply that when it says Jesus is the "Son of God" that he is God? We ought not look at the ancient words found in Scripture and judge them by modern thinking.
"For this reason therefore the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God," (John 5:18).
As you can see in this verse, Jesus was calling God his own Father, making himself equal to God. Therefore, the term Son of God is a designation of the equality with God when it is a reference to Christ.
Jesus is the Son of God
The phrase "Son of God" occurs 44 times in the New American Standard Bible. Each time it is used of Christ. It is a title of his preeminence, holiness, and relationship to God the Father. In fact, we see that the Pharisees wanted to kill him for proclaiming he was the son of God
“I and the Father are one.” 31 The Jews picked up stones again to stone Him. 32 Jesus answered them, “I showed you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you stoning Me?” 33 The Jews answered Him, “For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy; and because You, being a man, make Yourself out to be God.” 34 Jesus answered them, “Has it not been written in your Law, ‘I SAID, YOU ARE GODS’? 35 If he called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken), 36 do you say of Him, whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’?" (John 10:30-36).
In this account we see the second instance of Jesus being threatened with stoning. The first one is a little earlier.
"Jesus said to them, 'Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.' 59 Therefore they picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple," (John 8:58-59).
Jesus' words here are significant because he says he is the "I am." This is similar to what is found in Exodus.
God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM”; and He said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” 15 God, furthermore, said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘The LORD, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is My name forever, and this is My memorial-name to all generations," (Exodus 3:14-15).
When we combine all of this together we see that Jesus was claiming the divine title for himself (John 8:58; Exodus 3:14-15) and that is why the Jews wanted to kill him (John 8:59 and John 10:31). The explanation given is that Jesus was claiming equality with God by claiming that he was the Son of God.
So, when we say that Jesus is God we are saying that he is divine by nature. He is, after all, the second person of the Trinity. But when we say that Jesus is the Son of God, we are saying that he is also God since that is what the phrase means.

the bible is very specific on this.
jesus is the word. he is the word of god. he is the scriptures in a fleshly body. this makes him god incarnate, for all practical purposes. this guy is calling the word "divine nature". that shit is made up and i have no respect for that.
i just explained the rest of it in a different post. the bible is not open to personal interpretations. it interprets and defines itself.
jesus is the second adam. adam dies after about a thousand years. a thousand years is as a day to the lord. then after three days (thousand years), he was sent in the form of jesus of nazareth. three days in the earth. three days to be perfected, to be without sin.
atonement. cain killed abel but abel recieved atonement from cain when esau had to serve jacob. thus abel got his place in the lineage of christ that he was cheated out of by cain murdering him. adam pops up as melchezidek, joseph, joshua, david, in the fiery furnace and perhaps more, but he was not completed yet. when he was complete or perfect or sin-free, then he was born (needlessly for him) for the express purpose of telling people the process and making final atonement for bringing sin into the world.

Reincarnation wraps up the plan of salvation right neat and well-packaged..
though what about Jesus' descent into sheol during his time after death? Or the allusion to the bosom of abraham, in which there is a conversation between one dead and terrified man telling the other to warn of the destruction waiting folk trespassing God's favor?
There's something to be said about the urgency of the message of God's plan of salvation. I do not quite feel Paul would have willingly chosen to endure the multiple tortures he did if he understood that all the souls will likely reach the Father in the end by discovering Jesus at some time or other in their 10th or 15th iteration.
Reincarnation does not impart the urgency with which we are told to spread the message..
Or the severity with which the world was cleansed during the flood. The extent of the underwater archeologies all about us (see History Channel documentaries, etc, etc), give witness to a society rather foreign, but rather well-populated and organised.

I do think of heaven as having a literal exsistance, and God 'YHWH' the godhead having had existance from the very start. Jesus (Yahoshuvah) having been the only one to choose to walk the earth and teach and die for fallen creations..
When I read the scripture you quote, I see Jesus telling Simon Bar-jona, 'Bless you, My Father in heaven revealed this to you, you didn't work this out through your logic and brain alone.'

in this exchange, jesus is talking about revelation from the father. jesus says that he will build his church upon THAT - revelation from the father. it all comes from the father.

We're called to work out our salvation with fear and trembling, how does that match up with sunday-service ecumenical congregations? (Note that Wikipedia cautions that ecumeism shouldn't be mixed with inter-faith movements, but I'm sorta throwing them in the same boat here.)

Hrrmgh, it can work both ways. Few show the willing and obedient heart that humbles itself before God (Yahweh), and in that perspective, are chosen?
Paul's writings still give us a lot of issues in the congregations which have not grown up with mosaic patterns built into the culture and laws.
The message about the food you eat not being the defining factor of your status of salvation is a clear one, but should the life habits of Jesus (Yahoshuvah) not be the pattern of our days as new creations and adopted sounds and daughters?

Predestination I'm cool with. He knows our hearts even before he sends us here, and knows future, past and present perfectly. Everything else outside of Yahweh (God) are subject to what they are told and learn through experience.
But that's part of the joy...?
One gets to discover God and who one is... Once one's willing to give up playing god.

1-He (Jesus) is self-existent (John 1:1–4; 14:6); only God is self-existent (Psalm 90:2).
2-Jesus defines Himself as eternal. “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty” (Revelation 1:8).
3-He is, and has, eternal life (1 John 5:11, 12, 20).
4-He is all-powerful (Revelation 1:8).

So you are trying to say that Adam WAS Jesus? I just want to understand what you are saying. And you also deny the hypostatic union. (which would make sense because you are an arianist)

It's harder to understand scripture in english than in hebrew. And harder in greek than in hebrew too..
there are no masculine or feminine pronouns in english.. just memories.
And it's very hard to translate YHWH a plural hebrew word as plural-but-one.
Hear, oh Israel, YHWH (plural) thy God is ONE (together, unified, of one mind).
Can a family not work together as one..? Or
God the father
have the same thoughts and actions as
God the Holy Spirit
and share hs works and desires and thoughts with

This is a reply to # 2,255,553i couldnt do without the other gospels but john is the best.
that first verse says it all, imo. there is no difference between god and his word. it is totally consistent. there is also no difference between the father and the son.

Hooray for the writings of such a loving disciple! Especially the fact that Jesus choose John to take care of his mother Mary, passing on his responsibilities to her as the eldest son while he was sitting on the cross.
Jesus was thorough, wise as a serpent, gentle as a dove
So quickwitted that He put the Pharisees and saducees out of their high seat again and again...
