Found this little gem from the ever prolific liver flush forum member Telman. Lack of EFA's could be cause of congealed or hardened bile which would cause a viscious cycle of stone formation and the havoc they wreak.

"Cholesterol is not a fat but a solvent which is dissolved and kept in solution as a flowing liquid when there are adequate amounts of essential fatty acids. The melting point of cholesterol is 300 degrees F. When lecithin is present (a major component of bile), the melting point of cholesterol falls to 180 degrees but it is still insoluble. However, when the essential fatty acids linoleic and linolenic are present in sufficient quantity, the melting point of cholesterol falls to 32 degrees, which is below blood heat. Bile contains a proportion of these essential oils together with oleic fatty acids; the same component as olive oil. When bile is released into the gut in response to the flush potion and in the presence of Epson salts the cholesterol is prevented from being re-absorbed but the essential fatty acids are. Consequently without the correct mix of cholesterol and fatty acids the bile coagulates and solidifies forming balls of bile under certain circumstances. These balls of bile can be observed with true Gallstones and other liver congestion."

I think Telman's point was interesting but I agree, it does leave a lot unanswered. I hope he weighs in, haven't seen him in a while.
The EFA's are needed on a cellular level to create a permeable barrier on the cell wall to allow the proper exchange of minerals throughout the day. Sodium goes in, potassium comes out sort of thing.
If we don't have these EFA's to maintain a proper cell wall, the body will use cholesterol to build cell walls, which is not permeable. This is made in the liver. I don't know if this relates to Telman's comments, or if he is speaking strictly on a mechanical level regarding bile in the gut or liver and the body needing EFA's in those organs to maintain liquid bile state.
Regardless, I know a healthy body needs these EFA's. This is a big part of dehydration, if one lacks proper balance in EFA's, we will be dehydrated because of the cellular exchange of minerals I mentioned above not working properly. We all know that dehydration will cause stagnate or hardened bile, it's common sense I think.
A friend told me about this info, don't know if it's legit or not, but I'm looking into it...all the best:)
