i was just wondering about Iodine toxicity. i posted on the water forum about the best way to maintain and store treated water at room temperature and someone said to add 1-5 drops of Lugol's Iodine per 1 gallon of water to keep it pure and prevent growth of micro organisms.

i just did this, i used about 8 drops of Lugol's in a 3 gallon jug of treated/purified water i got. it tastes really strong like Iodine and i am wondering if this was a bad idea. i have been taking 1-2 drops of Lugol's daily usually with food...
what do you guys think about this amount in water? is it a bad idea to use that many drops, or any? i can taste it very strongly so i am concerned. what are the effects of too much iodine? is it really bad? i have had some chest pains lately and noticed the post below about arrythmia but i haven't been sleeping much at all so i figured its related to that...

This is a reply to # 2,104,327Iodine is the more reactive form that keeps virii and bacteria at bay, if there are any in the water you're trying to store. Try some vitamin C crystals to convert the Iodine to Iodide before consumption, it should make it taste better. BTW, Iodine won't do much for parasite control like giardia/crypto. Boil the water if unsure.

MoreThis is a reply to # 2,104,343well since it is treated from tap water initially, im sure that theres particles of bacteria/virus/etc, like maybe h.pylori. not sure if that gets killed off from all the treatment procedures but i guess maybe Iodine + vitamin c would neutralize that too? sounds liek a good idea, thanks. i feel a litle safer about consuming the strong iodine-water now. next time i dont think i will use as much though. i dont think it should be this strong. 8 drops to 3 gallons seems too much... probably should be like 1 drop a gallon it seems.

This is a reply to # 2,104,347really? well thats good to know... i thought that i heard there is some risk, as with anything. when i first bought it i remember reading protocols that said specifically to make sure not to take too much as this can be really bad. i dont remember why or where though... hmm. well thanx for the reassurance but im still a little unsure. i mean, everything in excess is toxic, right? (like, even excessive high doses of vitamin c will cause diarrea which is a toxic overload)

Any excess Iodine not used by the body simply goes out in the urine.
4 drops per gallon is enough to kill any germs. Lugols is safe and was intended for human consumption, your thyroid will thank you. I take 50 mg a day of iodoral Iodine (Lugols in tablet form) for optimal health.This is a good book to read:
