I was doing so great in June that I pushed myself WAY too hard and crashed... sending me back into a 6 week "valley" of fatigue, heat intolerance and depression. I was trying to 'hotwire' the slow ATP production my body with d-ribose, NADH & L-cartinine... which worked somewhat... but the whole underlying system was "off" and I felt like a mess.
Thankfully, forum member Klauss saved me with some valuable insight that it could be a thyroid issue.
IT WAS!
I got my thyroid tested with the standard labwork by the local doctor. Results: "100% fine". All values within middle of the normal range. Hmmm.
But still I was experiencing MOST of the symptoms of hypothyroid, according to the checklist in the book "Thyroid Mind Power" by Dr. Shames.
I remembered some advice I had gotten from Dr. Richard Shames in a consultation we did a couple years ago. He said that some fatigue symptoms in "adrenal" cases can actually be caused by poor conversion of t4 to t3. He recommended taking "Xymogen t3 Medcaps" - a semi-expensive supplement he has a financial stake in. If I didn't want to go that route...he said I could "roll my own" blend by taking 400ug of selenium, rosemary extract (or just cook with rosemary!), and some kelp. and add any adaptogen ingredients from the Xymogen t3 medcaps I wanted to.
So I remember this out of the back of my brain and Monday added:
- 1/2 of a Nature's Way Kelp capsule (330mg)- supplying
Iodine & iron
- 200ug selenium
- 400mg Nature's Way Rosemary leaf capsule (contains carsonic acid, needed to Thyroid to function)
- 1 Paradise Herbs Ashwaganda extract cap
to my daily supplement regime. These were for thyroid - t4 to t3 conversion support.
BAM!
Within 2 hours, I was feeling good. Almost like myself again. On Tuesday I went outside in the noon summer sun and I didn't feel like a snowman about to melt or die - it felt as if it were 10 degrees cooler. I worked all day, came home and cooked and picked up my house... and had energy to go out to an event... dancing and laughing until 11! Came home and slept well!
just days ago my routine would have been - "come home from, rest, try not to get depressed, pray for the best... no energy for washing dishes... too hot to go outside!"
Here's what I think happened - the crash I had in june shocked my system and caused my thyroid to slow down ... especially with t4 to t3 conversion. I've been eating organic food with
Sea Salt (no iodine).. not multi-vitamin... and I think I was low on
Iodine and selenium. Adding that plus rosemary and Ashwaganda really brought my thyroid back to life and filled my system with t3.. making me feel "normal" and turning my energy thermostat back up to "functional / active".
So moral of the story is:
1.) Low energy and fatigue can be caused by thyroid dysfunction just as easily as adrenal dysfunction
2.) Thyroid dysfunction can be brought on by crashes or stress
3.) Standard thyroid tests are WORTHLESS for detecting this VERY REAL t4 to t3 conversion problem / autoimmune dysfunction than can occur with AFS.
4.) You may not need prescription thyroid herbs, just a few vitamins and herbs can help help you get back on track in some cases.
I have ordered the Xymogen t3 Medcaps because it seems like it was blended by people who really know about this stuff, and want to try it myself... before substituting.
Thanks CureZone member for helping me sort this out... without your help I might have been screwed and suffering for a long time.
