Steps to liver detoxification
4. OBTAIN MORE METHYL DONORS. Some people, but not all, need more methyl donors. Methylation is one of the body’s most important methods to assist detoxification, particularly in the liver. It involves the addition of a methyl group, or CH3, to many types of toxins in the body. This converts toxins of all sorts from insoluble or less soluble compounds to water-soluble. This, in turn, allows the body to process them more easily.
Methylation, in this sense, is like tagging toxic substances in a way that allows the body to identify them as toxins, and then to eliminate them rapidly and simply. This is the most important aspect of methylation for nutritional balancing science, although it is a much more complex subject.
In fact, methylation is a common enzymatic process that activates or deactivates many genes, has to do with DNA and RNA metabolism, protects the body’s telomeres, supports neurotrasmitter synthesis and utilization, balances the hormones to some degree, reduces all inflammation in a powerful way by binding to and removing many toxins, helps protect the mitochondria, and does even more than this.
To facilitate this, methyl groups or CH3 can take the form of an anion with 7 or 8 free electrons, or a cation with 6 free electrons. Anion and cation have to do with its electrical charge. This is how it attaches to a variety of toxins and other molecules in the body.
Sources of methylating agents. Methylating agents or nutrients are found in natural foods, but not processed foods, and not in vegetarian foods nearly as much as in animal products. So avoid vegetarian diets if you want to get more of them.
Isolated chemicals that are methylating agents include inositol, choline, and niacinamide, three B-complex vitamins. Others are the amino acids methionine, cysteine and taurine to a degree. Others that are less powerful include pangamic acid, DMG or dimethyl glycine. This is also called vitamin B-15 by some people. Another is betaine, a compound found in beets that is extracted to form a supplement.
A few of these nutrients are often sold together in one vitamin tablet or capsule, such as ICMN by Endomet Laboratories. We occasionally use this product to assist methylation. However, as with all supplements, the extracts or isolated chemicals are quite yin in Chinese and macrobiotic terminology, and this is harmful, so if possible, I recommend eating the methylating foods, rather than taking any of them in pill form.
