I just took a shower and got my lips pretty wet (I usually don't). After showering, I noticed that around 1/2 - 3/4 inches of skin next, above and below my lip turned really white as well. It's thick skin build up... Anyone experiencing that as well? I probably don't just have a lip condition, but more like neurodermatitis or Psoriasis on and around my lips. My derm once said that this couldn't be conneced and that this might be skin that has build up because I don't wash those areas like I used to, but I don't think so anymore. This is a reply to # 1,961,101Yea, I've been doing it pretty much since my condition started. It does seem to spread.. There are areas on my top lip that are not affected, but the area between lip and nose still gets skin build up..
I have no clue. I will talk to my derm about it tomorrow. She's going to do a biopsy, maybe she can take one from those areas as well.
I'm close to giving up and I just want to wash of the huge yellow crusts. It seems like I'm not strong enough to do it for much longer. I feel like I have to stop, get the rest of my body in better shape (put the weight on that I lost since getting this) and try it another time..

This is a reply to # 1,961,145ECParent: I got EC in early march, and it has spread to 98% of my bottom lip and a big part of my top lip. I never peeled much myself, and only used a steroid cream for two weeks when it started, without any effect.
I then mostly left them alone, so it has been something like 3 to 3.5 months or so. It has gotten worse and worse, even with me leaving them alone. So I am close to giving up. I'm afraid of how well it would work when I manually peeled them.- Re: White skin build up besides lips Healing2021

I think your doctor could be right in saying that the whiteness is just dead skin because you dont wash that area as much. I get the same dead skin buildup on my lips (but around the affected area). I also get a little dead skin around my mouth because I dont scrub around my mouth like I used to.- Re: White skin build up besides lips sirpreis

This is a reply to # 1,961,160Hi Sirpreis - you haven't had it that long - seems like by now you should see some progress in 3 months - I follow Daniels blog too - and he has been doing it for awhile and says they seem to feel and look different - but not cured yet.
I don't know - seems like there has to be an answer someday - I look back years ago and some people have never come back - i always wonder if they just learned to live with it or it healed and they don't know why so maybe they didn't come back?- Re: White skin build up besides lips sirpreis

This is a reply to # 1,961,180Either would be fine.. I can't see how I'd be able to live with it though, at least not with yellow crusts all over my lips, that have now even started to smell... Right now its pretty much day by day.. each day feels like a struggle. I'm crying at lot these days.. as a 29 year old married man.. There are people that don't have it as severy as I do, they may be able to live with it, I don't know.
I guess this condition can just away as quick as it came (there were cases of severe EC that just went away quickly after many years). In some cases, this condition might be scabs trying to heal the lips, but I think in many other cases, it's just a skin disorder at a very difficult position. And I'm starting to believe that this might be the case for me.
How old is your son?

He is 17 - I don't think his is as bad as some of the pics I have seen - its not bad on the top - just the triangle mainly. And the bottem seems to be kind of a line across the middle of his lip - not the whole lip. I can understand your frustration though - he doesn't go anywhere this summer - and it bothers me - I feel like I live with Howard Hughes! I think it may just spontaneously go away but you never know when that will be. In the meantime I guess we keep trying things - we live in Phoenix AZ and the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine is here - I am contacting them to see if maybe they could use him as a kind of case study. I would think it would be interesting for students to try and figure out - its something you would think would cure easily - but it doesn't!
Whatever your decision - I wish you luck! I know its hard to live with for sure!

This is a reply to # 1,961,192Yea, that's the biggest problem, we don't know if, and if so, when it so going to heal / go away.
I live in Germany and have started to contact a "centre for rare diseases", which we have a few of in Germany. They have answered and the doctors want to have some findings of my derm, biopsy results (I'm only getting the biopsy tomorrow) and stuff like that. They probably wont fix me, but we'll see.
Best of luck to you and your son too! There are other things a guy of his age should be worrying about.. (as there are other things I at my age should be worrying about :)).

If your lips are starting to smell really bad, chances are you have some sort of fungal or bacterial infection, which the biopsy should show. make sure they do a culture too. This possible infection could be the reason it is still spreading. Another word of advice, listen to your doctor. If you have some sort of infection and they tell you to take some pill or Antibiotic I would take it. A lot of people on here are skeptical about listening to their doctors but the truth is they know a lot more than anyone on here.- Re: White skin build up besides lips sirpreis

This is a reply to # 1,961,199My huge crust on my bottom lip just came off (well, it was just laying on my lip, so I manually took it off, without any force, I hope that's ok...). There was some white fluid underneath, which is probably one of the things that's smelling. I will take it with me to my derm today. It could be some sort of fungal/bacterial build up, but it might just be water that came inside from the side (the crust was lifted up a little on the side) and then couldn't get out. That could be very possible, but I'm not sure.
The second thing that seems to smell are the often soaked (by saliva) parts on my top lip, because most of my EC on my top lip is more on the inside, you mostly can only see the middle part from the outside.
How long did you have to wait to get your biopsy results?

i do have same thing happening to my lips also like yours.....it is just spreading and have foul smell.....it may be a fungal infection and it just start last week.....
if you have any idea about it please update i am scared about it?????

I agree that doctors/dermatologists should have more knowledge about organism and his mechanism but if they're completely lost after one or two trivial attempts it's quite chilling.
And no, they are not bad dermatologists (perhaps stupid in their approach I confess, for some), they are just surprised of a case they don't know at all and seem so resourceless facing it.- Re: White skin build up besides lips Healing2021

This is a reply to # 1,961,252I got this condition when i just turned 15 now Im 16, is it also coincidental that most people who develop this condition are young males, or is it just the fact that women continue to peel their lips no matter the discomfort.
