41 There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty.

44 And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head.

45 Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet.

46 My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment.

47 Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.

48 And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven.

49 And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins also?

Hi Doc,
You are obviously a devout Christian, as I am, and I am sorry that you take the current translations of the bible in the way that you do. At the time the gospels were written, a great deal all of what is now considered magic was then common medical practice, or simply accepted as common practice. When you consider that Jesus raised the dead, converted water to wine, performed the miracle of the loaves and fishes, expelled demons, and healed the sick by laying on of hands, then you might consider a direct translation of the bible as being against any occult practice as out of context.
He also taught all of his disciples to heal the sick, & expel demons and to perform miracles. And maybe a good deal more, if you are willing to consider the other gospels that were not included in the current bible- the gospel of Thomas and the gospel of Mary Magdalene.
If you read the passages that you quoted in context, it translates into modern language as you shall not use the occult to harm and damage others. Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live becomes get rid of a black sorcerer, or a black occult practitioner. Or anyone who practices mental arts in order to control or damage another.
All of the medicine, most business, the the three wise men who came to honor Jesus at his birth used astrology. Why else would they follow a star to the manger where our lord was born?
It is a great pity to see a wonderful religious tradition used as an implement of social control, as an excuse to plunder, steal and profit from the knowledge and wisdom of our ancestors.
