Arn, here's a thought, off the cuff...
How about, a dedicated forum where people can post links to messages they think are against a person or inappropriate. Then, when the link is posted there, it automatically allows the original poster to go and edit the message one time to remove whatever it was the objector objected to ? (As it stands, once someone replies to a posted message, the edit function is disabled). Maybe this can be patented and CZ derive some funds from it.
I've seen quite a few messages where folks calling others ninkompoops, boobs, jerks, bozos, nerds, etc. Many aren't bothered by that sort of thing, but others are. I've seen some that are far worse than playground name calling, even directed to myself at times. I tend to shrug it off, but wish they didn't write it because of the appearance it gives to the integrity of the site, & I think that's where you're coming from....
As it stands, moderators are voluntary time donors and given the structure of the site, its probably not humanly possible for the mods to remove all undesirable messages, as diligent as they may try to be.
So, a "complaint forum" could be a place that would get loaded up with "whistleblowers" identifying undesirable messages, and then maybe there could be a moderator who goes through there from time to time, and makes appropriate corrections. Once the content of the "complained about message" is corrected, the mod could delete the complaint message, so we don't get a "complaint forum" that's too filled up.
I think if people saw this type of mechanism in action, whereby messages show up on such a forum, it could be a good deterrent to the same poster doing the same thing over and over again. I think it could effectively stop a lot of them from repeating that behavior, because they know they'd get fingered and that would carry some embarrassment effect, and nobody wants to be embarrassed.
It'd be an alternate, possibly more effective and visible way for members to self-police the site, instead of just clicking on an "alert" button.
I haven't thought this through and invite community comments, been working in the hot sun all day and then a grueling experience this evening when the clutch on my truck gave out in heavy traffic, arrgghhh !!
If I ever wrote anything that offended, you, I truly apologize. This goes for everyone too. If we work together, we can come together and make this a better place, a model place. This mechanism might help people who currently disagree, to become more in agreement, at least on civility, which lack thereof has repelled some good folks from time to time. Maybe something like this is a good answer.
