Hi, I am meant to have Strongyloides and yes I am always asking how I could have got it!Stronyloides is a third world desease and the
parasite is native to the tropics. places like India, South Africa, Thailand etc
Farm workers are meant to be much more exposed to parasites. I never was a farm worker but I kept horses for two decades so I was regularly up to my armpits in dung. I fed them treats by hand and would think nothing of letting them lick my hands for salt.
I was a keen waterskier, and here in the UK we ski alot in lakes...
I am a keen gardener. it goes without saying that you can be in constant contact with worms, snails and slugs. yes I would wear gloves, but there is always the time you sneeze or blow your nose and hands go to the face dirty gloves and all!
But non of this should result in strongyloides, because they are not supposed to be in our lakes and gardens in the UK!
The next thing I considered was my husband. he served in the Armed forces overseas in the far east for 5 yrs. many of the prisoners of war who were imprisoned by the Japanese returned with Strongyloides. he was trsted and came back negative, so I cannot blame him.
I am just wondering if I contracted it from digging in my garden in Spain- the Balearic Islands! what if emmigrating birds flew back from South Africa or India to my garden in Spain and their droppings contained eggs!
I could go on like this all day and I will never find the answer!
