Welcome to the club!
I'm a little over 2 months removed from finishing the medication and I feel better and better each day.
I can eat whatever the hell I want w/ out feeling the urge to go to the bathroom, I'm not fatigued, I can think clearly, I can work out at the gym. Fantastic to have my life back!
Unlike the others, I needed validation that I fully eradicated the bug, so I visited Dr. Cahill again 6 weeks after finishing the medication. Indeed, the bug was gone.
In terms of the medication, I did not take the exact meds Dr. Cahill prescribed. As he probably told you, the prescription he gives kills the bug 80-85% of the time. If you still have the bug thereafter, he gives you a stronger dosage.
I didn't want to take the chance so consulted with doctors in my family and Shrimpy to take a stronger dosage. This dosage is recommended by numerous publications that I'm sure Tropical Boy can send you links for, if you'd like.
I took Tinidazole 2.5g once a day for 5 days. (Tissue Drug)
Followed that with 1000mg of Paromomycin 3 times a day for 10 days with Doxycycline 50mg once a day for 10 days. (Lumen Drug)
Just to be safe, I also took a 5 day combo for cryptic Giardia consisting of Quinacrine and Albendazole.
I didn't have much reaction to the Tinidazole, with the exception of upper should pain. This is most likely because I've taken it many, many times before.
The real reaction came to the Paramomycin and it came in 2 cycles. The first was within the first 1-2 days of the meds. I literally had to go to the bathroom over 25 times. I assume the body was detoxing from killing the bugs. The second cycle (which I'm assuming was the bugs trying to repopulate) was about 5-6 days in. I got the worst heart burn I've ever had in my life.
The most notable difference after finishing the meds was the chronic right shoulder pain I had. It was gone. Completely gone after being there for the past 3 years. I too have read a lot of publications on this topic and it's most likely that this was caused from the amoeba invading the liver.
Also, this all started with my sinuses. I even had sinus surgery and within days, all my sinus issues came back due to EH. Literally, within 2-3 days my sinuses were completely clear. I can't even remember the last time I was able to breathe out of both nostrils but 2 months later, I can still breathe and have not had any shoulder pain.
These two things were the first to clear up but even 2-3 weeks after, I still felt pretty terrible. You can even ask Shrimpy.
I spoke to Richard Behar, the journalist Shrimpy references, and he said it really took him 4-6 weeks to start feeling better.
And truth be told, he was right on. 8 weeks later, I feel like myself again.
EH was an absolute bitch and even when I blatantly told the doctors at the Cleveland Clinic, supposedly one of the best hospitals in the world, they told me all the meds I had previously taken would have killed EH.
There are a lot of people on these forums that tell you what they believe can fix you. Trust me, I spent countless hours trying to follow people's advice to get better during the 3.5 years I had EH. Nothing worked. Everyone who comes on here and tells you stool samples, herbal supplements, certain drugs can fix you, my experience (and others) are a testament that unfortunately, their advice is incorrect.
If you have any additional questions, I would be happy to answer them.
Cheers,
Brian
