Aluminum oxide is what porcelain is made from. The jury is out on this one - dentists say it's 100% safe and the aluminum is not water soluble so can't enter the bloodstream, though Huggins found neurological damage in people with porcelain fillings.
I went with the composite TPH3 since it is BPA and metal free. You can always get bio-compatibility tests done if you think it will be an issue.
material safety data sheet on TPH3:

It seems that there is NO filling material that doesn't contain questionable things. For instance TPH3 contains "Barium boron alumino silicate glass." What the hell is that? I'm seeing barium and alumino? - these suggest bad things but who knows.
My strategy is to pick the lesser of the evils and have as little amount of foreign matter in my mouth as possible. I avoided the BPA because I have seen several anecdotal accounts where the estrogenic reaction was so bad the composites had to be replaced.
The mercury is out. No BPA introduced. I rejected my dentist's insistence that I also fill a tiny dark spot. When I say "rejected" I mean all out confrontation. I don't want any more composite material in my mouth than I already have. Let the damn tooth fall out, I don't care.
I challenge the whole concept that we need "dental care" to keep our teeth healthy. Seems like people who stay away from the dentist (like me) have healthy teeth, and those that keep running back to the dentist every year are a mess of crowns, fillings, root canals, etc (my sister).
