The first bitter I tried was Jiaogulan. I happened to have the capsules on hand, but later when I bought the liquid bitters, and I've tried several different kinds, they had no effect on me and they didn't even taste bitter compared to the Jiaogulan. So it was just a waste of money. I now just stick with the Jiaogulan. My husband says the powder tastes like he is licking an ash tray.
I don't use much of the powder so cost wise it doesn't seem too bad. One capsule can last up to a week.
Just thought I'd mention my experience as another option.
He has mentioned that licorice is bitter too.
Not bitter, it is sweet. Licorice root is about 50 times sweeter than table sugar. They probably added it to help make the bitters easier to get down.

Yes, jiaogulan is definitely bitter. I dilute the tea down quite a bit then add a little stevia extract, which I really like the flavor of. Full strength jiaogulan tea though is pretty rough to get down.
I've never tried making a tea. I open a capsule and pour the powder directly onto my tongue. I sometimes can't get rid of the taste for hours. If someone I know tries it and makes a funny expression on their face and complains, I tell them not to be a whimp.

It looks like this is something new, never saw it before.
It is a 16oz bottle for $22.93
Right now it is impossible to find the Planetary Herbals
every store is out of stock, who knows may be they will come out with a new product.
These are the Now ingredients:
Proprietary Liquid Extract Blend of:
Licorice Root (Glycyrrhiza glabra), Dandelion Root (Taraxacum officinale), Gentian Root (Gentiana lutea), Angelica Root (Angelica archangelica), Turmeric Root (Curcuma longa), Juniper Berry (Juniperus communis), Blessed Thistle (Cnicus benedictus) (Aerial Parts) and Rhubarb Root (Rheum palmatum)
Hv does this sound ok, except may be the rhubarb root.
The rhubarb root is not good since it is a strong stimulant laxative.
Another herb that should have been left out was the angelica root, which contains coumarins and psoralens that are photosensitizers.
If people stick to the small amounts I recommend, a half dropper full, the risk of problems is negligible.
