Happy February 1st!
I wanted to add something that happened to me recently, and also ask you about your experiences. I was diagnosed with mild hypothyroidism a couple of years before I had Mirena put in, so I know that the two things are unrelated (unless it was caused by past birth control...hmmm...food for thought). Because of this, I see an endocrinologist regularly.
I went to the endo doctor in October for a regular blood check, and to tell him about my mirena troubles and hair loss. I am losing hair in the front (some hairline recession and very thinning, can see scalp in some areas) and at the crown - hair loss that's typical for a man but not a woman. Also, it has changed texture and tangles easily, etc. He ran some specific blood tests and found that my level of testosterone was on the high side, which he said was probably caused the the hormones in Mirena (thyroid probs can cause hair probs, but I'd never had them before). Anyways, he recommended that I have the Mirena removed, which I'd planned on doing anyways. That was in October, and I just went to see him again last week for a check-in. I mentioned that I wasn't seeing any hair regrowth yet - if anything I'm continuing to lose a little bit. He warned me that it can sometimes take 6 months for hair regrowth to occur. And then he wrote me a scrip for Rogaine. I'm a 30 year old woman who's always had long flowing Indian girl hair - with a prescription for Rogaine. Ugh.
Anyways, just thought I'd share that with you so you know what my endo said. I'm still deciding if I want to use Rogaine or not...because it has it's own list of potentially bad side effects. Not trying to jump from the frying pan into the fire over hair. At the same time, I'm not too excited about the idea of having a comb-over. And it's not like I can just shave it off like a man! Here's hoping it'll start growing back on its own!
