Can you please take a look at this picture (I took it about 2:00 a.m. today)?
The middle of last week I felt a couple tiny bumps under my left earlobe. I think I may have scraped it thinking it was a pimple. The next day I had a little bit of swelling and the area turned red. I also noticed that directly below this rash about an inch (and a little to the left) it felt like I had a swollen lymph node just below my jaw line. It was a little sore.
So I started putting 100% Tea Tree Oil on it. That appeared to make it scab up. I think it's been four or five days and I've continued to put Tea Tree Oil on it. I've also sprayed it with CS and today I put some 100% Manuka Honey (Active 16+) on it.
I have no idea what this is. I've never had a rash like this before. If you look at it closely, it looks like there's about ten small dots.
The only thing I can come up with is Shingles? Years ago I would get a cold sore now and then but nothing like this.
What do you think it is and what should I do?
It is not shingles. Looks a lot like a staph infection. This will form small, pimple sized bumps not filled with pus but rather clear fluid. The fluid dries to a golden-brownish "scab" when scratched open.
Tea tree oil, or other antibacterial essential oil, or peroxide can kill the bacteria, but the bacteria will generally take hold where there is skin damage such as cracks from the skin becoming too alkaline. Therefore, I recommend adding a mild acid the area first to restore the skin pH before applying the tea tree. Vinegar will work for an acid, or make a citric acid solution.
Wow! I've never had a staph infection before! It's a good thing I started hitting it with the tea tree oil as soon as I noticed it.
I thougt about H2O2 but I wasn't sure what strength to use.
Anyway, I kept hitting it with the tea tree oil, CS, and Manuka honey for three or four more days and it pretty much scrabbed up and went away.
So what would have happened had I done nothing?
Often it will clear up on its own if the immune system kicks back up. Staph is a normal part of the body but does not give us issues normally unless our immune systems get knocked down. If the immune system does not kick back in then the rash could have gotten worse, but is usually more irritating than dangerous.
