According to Dr. J, it is much better to take the sublingual (oral) progesterone rather than the creams. With the creams, you can't avoid too much soaking in at once, etc...and that is why so many women have such great luck with it for a couple of weeks and then they feel even worse than before.
The bioidentical progesterone that he has me on is called Progon B...they are little pellets that you put under your tongue and then swallow. I have had a lot of relief with it!
Actually the difference between transdermal and oral progesterone is the path they take. Transdermal progesterone creams are applied to the fatty areas of the body for a reason. As the progesterone absorbs through the skin the progesterone traps in the fat cells where it is then slowly released in to the bloodstream. But this also increases the risk of progesterone dominance, especially when used long term. When taken orally the progesterone passes soon through the liver where much of the progesterone is metabolized. So there is less progesterone available to cause problems.
Women should be aware of the side effects of progesterone. These include cancer, weight gain, acne, hyperaggression, insomnia, depression, increased risk of gallstones and lack of libido:

I wasn't trying to explain the difference medically, I was explaining the "why"--according to Dr. J.--the cream can come back to cause symptoms.
I understand that but the explanation was wrong, which is why I was explaining why. Using progesterone transdermally does not create a sudden surge of progesterone as it traps in the fat cells then slowly releases. This is why the cream is supposed to be applied over fatty tissues. But because of the slow release it can also build up in the fat tissue leading to progesterone dominance.
The reason oral progesterone is less likely to cause such severe side effects is that it is metabolized readily by the liver instead of being stored in the body, so in short there is less actual progesterone in the body compared to transdermal applications.
