Ashwagandha is a natural beta blocker, and will help support the adrenals also helping to prevent excess epinephrine.
Jiaogulan will also help strengthen the adrenals reducing epinephrine release. Jiaogulan is also the highest herbal source of sterols that I am aware of. Sterols help to relax blood vessels lowering blood pressure. They are also great for lowering cholesterol.
Also get to the doctor early so he has time to sit and relax. Have him sit there and take some slow deep breaths and have him exhale slowly through his nose. Doing this 3-4 times will help relax him.
Last night by 8:00 P.M. his blood pressure was down to 102/54. I have never seen it that low! He had been laying down on the couch after a stressful day of having his physical at the doctors office. I really think the Coleus Forskohlii made the difference, but he was taking other stuff also ( the lisinopril, hawthorn, Vit E and fish oil...Oh yeah and some Chanca Piedra all were in the morning and the Coleus he took 2 at 10:00 a.m. and 2 more at 2:00 p.m.) His exam was at 3:00. His BP was 160/96 and then at 4:45 later on at home, his BP was 119/67. I just wish those effects would stay consistent for the doctor doing the DOT exam.
My husband is going to try going back in for another BP reading this week, maybe by Friday we can get it figured out.
Today so far I just have him taking the Coleus to see how that works by itself.
I have both Ashwagandha and Jiaogulan. I have read some customer reviews of people getting the opposite reaction with Ashwagandha (increased BP and rapid heart beat)and so I've been reluctant to suggest that he take it. There have been a couple of situations where it did seem to give me a pounding heart experience also, but overall Ashwagandha has helped me deal with stress and I really like it. It is definitely one of my favorite herbs.
I think once he gets home I will have him try the Ashwagandha. Then tomorrow he has an appointment with a primary care doctor (we are meeting for the first time). The BP they take tomorrow will be a good test, but it won't count towards the DOT physical.
I will also help him practice the slow deep breaths here at home to help us remember to do them at the office. We will have to get there early and sit around before we check in because last time, even though we got there early they called us in right away.
He passed everything else in the physical except for his blood pressure. He is overweight, but he is a strong, hard worker and he gets more done than most people I know. It's a pity this job is reliant on one factor - His BP (taken at a specific doctors office.)
Thank you for your help James/ Hveragerthi. You are always so kind and willing to help people. You'd make a good Saint! You've already chocked up lots of points for it.

This would only happen with allergies to the herb. Allergic responses result in an increase of epinephrine (adrenaline) that speeds up and strengthens the heart contractions.

Coleus also helps with weight loss not only by supporting thyroid function, but also by stimulating brown adipose tissue (BAT) to burn white adipose tissue (WAT). Same principle as the use of ephedrine to stimulate BAT, but with a lowering of blood pressure instead of an increase in blood pressure.
My bloodpressure is only high when I go to the doctor
so the last 2 years I put some bitters on my tongue before I go and that helps bring it down to normal.
Might not work for everybody, but Hv once told me my lightheaded feeling was from using too high a dose of bitters.
Yes, stimulation of the vagus nerve with bitters can lower blood pressure.
Thank you Marci! I was wondering if your husband ever passed his test. It may be that he (my husband) will have to take the beta blocker. We already tried 80 mg lisinopril taking 40 in the morning and 40 mg at night without much effect. And I don't like him taking that much. It wasn't until we added in the 4 capsules of Coleus Forskohlii that we got the blood pressure to go significantly low.
I'm not even sure the lisinopril is doing anything to be honest. Once again, it's hard to know when you are trying a bunch of stuff together. And when you are short on time it's difficult to isolate each thing to see what is really working.
Trying to get hubs BP down has been quite stressful on both of us. I'd like to speak with the person who made up these DOT physical requirements. If we had other options for earning a living to make our house payment it wouldn't be quite so frustrating.
Marci, have you tried Turmeric? I wonder if it would help your husband's chest pain. I never really tried it until a couple of weeks ago when I got my son's cold. It was mostly in my sinuses. I tried Turmeric with Quercetin and it helped wonders! It seemed to help ease my symptoms of itchy watery eyes and sneezing and it also seemed like the cold didn't last as long as it normally would have. That combination is now going to be my "go to medicine" for colds and flue that involve the sinuses.
The turmeric also by itself helped get rid of headaches, aches and pains and cramps from my menstruation.
I don't know if he would be open to trying it, but if it worked it would seem to be a lot healthier than taking Aspirin everyday.
Yeah...We are pinching pennies too. I did just order some more Coleus Forskohlii (because we can't get it around here), Hawthorn and Quercetin. I agonized over spending the money on it and finally decided they were essential, but anything else will just have to wait. Luckily I already have enough other supplements (My kids tease me that I have enough for my own store - but no it's only a few boxes full.)
This is one situation where I was really glad I had them - like the Coleus to help lower my husband's blood pressure. And for once he is grateful for all the time, money and effort I've spent researching herbs and their benefits. (And Hveragerthi's time and effort too - Thank you Hveragerthi!!)

You are welcome.
Bob won't take any natural stuff any more. You know the story ... it doesn't work fast enough or well enough for him. It's got to work NOW or he won't bother with it. Stubborn old mule!
Aspirin really is not that good for the heart or the body. You should have him read my articles on the subject:
http://mountainmistbotanicals.com/info/aspirin-and-heart-attacks.htm
http://mountainmistbotanicals.com/info/nsaids_and_heart.htm

Natural stuff works but it takes longer.
Not always. Many times herbs will work faster and more effectively than pharmaceuticals. Just depends on the herb. Same applies for some supplements.
An update... We had our doctor appointment this morning and this new doctor actually seemed like a pretty good guy. I did not detect any arrogance, just a sincere desire to help. He said the beta blocker would not be a good choice because my husbands heart rate is already low (66). So he gave us a prescription for a diuretic, stating that usually when the diastolic number is that high it's because of too much fluid in the body or a malfunction with the kidneys.
His BP at the office today was still too high. It was 140/100, BUT... At this other clinic (where we went today) my husband is a little more relaxed and it doesn't go as high as the 160/96 where his DOT physical is being done.
The good news is this doctor said he could sign off for the DOT physical once the BP comes down enough. So the plan is for hubs to go back in on Friday. Between the new diuretic and adding the herbs it should be low enough for him to get certified.
My experience through all of this is that the herbs work better than the meds, both in how quickly they kick in and in how effective they are. Plus I must say the side effects are far more desirable with the herbs than with prescription meds. The prescription meds have side effects of memory loss, poor circulation of cold hands and feet, dizziness and impotence just to name a few.
Whereas the side effects of herbs can be exactly the opposite, better circulation, more energy, increase in libido and brain function.
I've also noticed the herbs have a more desirable affect on the diastolic number in my husbands blood pressure. Both the Hawthorn and the Coleus Forskohlii bring the diastolic number down AND they also seem to even out the readings between the left and right arm.
Where the lisinopril only will marginally bring down the systolic number and still there is a vast difference in my husband's readings between his left and right arm. It's kind of strange... His right arm has ALWAYS been much higher than his left. It might have something to do with where his heart attack was 10 years ago. One side of his heart had two blockages, one a complete blockage and another was a partial blockage down along the same artery.
One good thing I hope to come of this is his being more aware of his health and having some incentive to make healthier decisions. He has been somewhat complacent, but it is hard to always be so vigilant about ones diet and exercise.
At least we have found some herbs that really make a difference in his blood pressure and over time they might increase his health.
I know I feel smarter and more energetic than I did before I started taking herbs and other supplements. I am much more courageous in trying new things and having the confidence to do them. I'm thinking of volunteering for our local fire department and I'd like to learn how to do grant writing. Our local homeless shelter could really use some funding. They are running only on donations and volunteers right now.
I would have never had the confidence to even consider the possibility that I could be useful enough to do something like that before.
All thanks to the long term use of the herbs and supplements that James has suggested. They really have built up my endurance over time. I can finally tackle daily challenges and believe that I can accomplish things.
Sure the economy is bad and both my husband and I are looking for work, but I no longer feel despair. My health both mental and physical is in a much better state and I am better able to deal with things now than I was a few years ago. And I know I wouldn't feel that way if it weren't for some of these wonderful herbs.
Government commodities to the poor should include rations of Ashwagandha and Schizandra. We should be strengthening our nation and building up our people by giving them some real tools that make a difference. LOL
...As you can tell I really love my herbs and supplements. I will be forever grateful for the way they have given me my life back.
Thank you Hanna. I use bitters occasionaly, but sometimes I get a detox reaction. I seem to do better with them if I add in extra Magnesium Malate. It might just be that extra stuff is getting cleaned out of my system and the magnesium helps keep my electrolytes up. Otherwise I also tend to get muscle cramps when using a lot of bitters. I'm usually very sensitive to things though.
