There is an extremely high markup on commercial tintures, and you can save good deal of money making your tinctures at home.
Yes, there is an extremely high markup on commercial tinctures. And tinctures are rarely a better choice than powders, which is why I rarely recommend or use tinctures.
I'm going to order chaparral leaves and make extract (I cannot find chaparral powder). I am clueless as to make any tincture or extract. I don't know much about liquor, either.
Could you please recommend to me where and what kind of alcohol to buy to make chaparral extraction - hopefully, something I can buy from a local Trader Joe?
Any advice and tip will be greatly appreciated.
Most herbs can be tinctured with standard 80 proof vodka or similar alcohol. With resinous herbs though such as chaparral a higher concentration of alcohol is required. For chaparral I recommend at least a 90 proof alcohol, which vodka can also be found in 90 proof. To make a tincture put some of the herb in to a glass jar and cover with the alcohol by about an inch. Put some thin plastic or wax paper over the mouth of the jar and put the lid on. The plastic or wax paper will prevent the tincture from contacting any metal that may be in the lid. Keep in a cool dark place and shake the mixture several times daily for at least 2 weeks. Then strain the liquid from the herb and store in dark, airtight glass bottles.
Trader Joe's should have 90 proof alcohols. You do not need a particular brand or type, just at least 90 proof.
What would be the dosage, lets say for a cold? 10-20 drops?
Can you make a tincture from all 3, Pau D'Arco/Chaparral/Andrographis?
For colds andrographis is more effective, but taking chaparral along with the andrographis will help prevent it from going in to a respiratory infection.
If you can though try to use herbs in powder form as opposed to tinctures. Tinctures have a lot of drawbacks and rarely provide more benefit than from powders. The only time I generally recommend tinctures would be in an emergency situation like an asthma attack where very quick action is required. Otherwise the few minutes saved over taking herbs as powders on an empty stomach has no benefits and again some drawbacks. For example, the alcohol from tinctures can alter the chemistry of herbs, in some cases neutralizing the properties of the herb.
James, I was going to order some formulations from you, do you have Andrographis Powder you can sell? I can not find any from good source.
Can you combine it with Astralagus to fight cold/flu?
I am not over there to check how much I have in stock, but more than likely I can spare some.
Yes, it can be combined with astragalus.
Do you suggest combining astralagus for the cold or any other infections?
For some infections. Astragalus is a great immune supporter and adaptogen. With some infections though other strong full range antimicrobials may be a better choice.
