How much KI should I take?
The FDA has approved two different forms of KI—tablets and liquid—that people can take by mouth after a nuclear radiation emergency. Tablets come in two strengths, 130 milligram (mg) and 65 mg. The tablets are scored so they may be cut into smaller pieces for lower doses. Each milliliter (mL) of the oral liquid solution contains 65 mg of KI.
According to the FDA, the following doses are appropriate to take after internal contamination with (or likely internal contamination with) radioactive iodine:
* Adults should take 130 mg (one 130 mg tablet OR two 65 mg tablets OR two mL of solution).
* Women who are breastfeeding should take the adult dose of 130 mg.
* Children between 3 and 18 years of age should take 65 mg (one 65 mg tablet OR 1 mL of solution). Children who are adult size (greater than or equal to 150 pounds) should take the full adult dose, regardless of their age.
* Infants and children between 1 month and 3 years of age should take 32 mg (½ of a 65 mg tablet OR ½ mL of solution). This dose is for both nursing and non-nursing infants and children.
* Newborns from birth to 1 month of age should be given 16 mg (¼ of a 65 mg tablet or ¼ mL of solution). This dose is for both nursing and non-nursing newborn infants.

You and I know that it is very safe(and can be beneficial) to take far more than 130mg...

... The thyroid needs iodine to regulate metabolism and is unable to distinguish between regular dietary iodine and ingested radioactive iodine. So the researchers weren't surprised when, in the course of the project, they noticed that the mice subjects' thyroids always absorbed a significant amount of radioactive iodine. In addition to being potentially bad for the mouse, the thyroid's absorption of radioactive iodine made the images difficult to interpret and could provide false-positive readings or possibly obscure substantial iodine uptake in nearby tissues.
The team decided to test what would happen if they gave the mice potassium iodide, the FDA-recommended drug for blocking radioactive iodine absorption by the thyroid in the event of a nuclear accident, before exposing the mice to a form of radioiodine used in imaging studies. CWM undergraduate William Hammond, who will be presenting the team's findings at the American Physical Society (APS) April Meeting, Session E12.0004, participated in this phase of the research for his senior thesis project.
The researchers started with the Potassium Iodide dose that's recommended for humans in the event of a nuclear incident, 130 mg (milligrams), and scaled that down to the mass of the mouse. They administered a liquid form of the drug to mice, injected the radioiodine for imaging an hour later, and then imaged the mouse.
"What we noticed was this: the dose that was exactly the scaled human dose did not completely block the uptake of radioiodine. But when we tried three times, five times, ten times the scaled human dose, we obtained results that indicate that ten times the human dose blocks 1.5-2 times better, though five times is just about as good as ten times," Welsh says.
The researchers recognized that the extra benefit gained by the largest potassium iodide dose administered could in some cases be outweighed by potential side effects. To protect their mice in future imaging studies, they're planning to use the potassium iodide dose that's five times the scaled-down human dose.
As for larger implications, the study should not simply be scaled-up and applied to humans. "It could say that a mouse's metabolism is so different from a human's that you can't just scale the human dose down for mice. But when it comes to small animals, I think the results should be taken into consideration," Welsh notes. "

Iodine-131 (131I), also called radioiodine (though many other radioactive isotopes of this element are known), is an important radioisotope of iodine. Its uses are mostly medical and pharmaceutical. It also plays a role as a major radioactive hazard present in nuclear fission products, and was a significant contributor to the health effects from open-air atomic bomb testing in the 1950s, and from the Chernobyl disaster. This is because I-131 is a major uranium fission product, comprising nearly 3% of the total products of fission.
Due to its mode of beta decay, iodine-131 is notable for causing mutation and death in cells which it penetrates, and other cells up to several millimeters away. For this reason, high doses of the isotope are sometimes paradoxically less dangerous than low doses, since they tend to kill thyroid tissues which would otherwise become cancerous as a result of the radiation. Thus, iodine-131 is increasingly not used in small doses in medical use, but increasingly only in large and maximal treatment doses, as a way of killing targeted tissues. This is known as "therapeutic use."
Although the isotope can be "seen" by nuclear medicine imaging techniques (i.e., gamma cameras) whenever given for therapeutic use, other safer radioisotopes of Iodine are coming to be preferred in situations when only nuclear imaging is required. I-131 is still occasionally used for diagnostic work, due to its low expense compared to other isotopes. This availability, in turn, is due to the relative ease of creating the nuclide by neutron bombardment of natural tellurium in a nuclear reactor, and then separating it by various simple methods. (Other Iodine radioisotopes are usually created by far more expensive techniques starting with reactor radiation of xenon gas).
Much smaller incidental doses of iodine-131 than are used in medical treatment, are thought to be the major cause of increased thyroid cancers after accidental nuclear contamination.

This is a reply to # 1,782,641i take 400mg a day and that is to protect me from this cesspool called dallas. it should also cover a little exposure to radioactive isotopes.
i didnt really care for ben fuchs on alex jones but he has a very important concept down pat. if you dont provide the minerals the body needs to do its thing, it will take substitutes to use in the proper mineral's place. eg, another possible byproduct of a nuclear blast is the isotope of strontium.

and of course bromine and fluorine instead of iodine, as we well know. i think theres a selenium/arsenic connection too. anyway, get those minerals you need and avoid the ones you dont.

This is good. It's great you left the government site as to how much KI is needed. I think your message should be "R"'d, if for no other reason than the discussion we had here at home...(hubby said, "Who is 'they'?" - I said, the CDC) - The CDC is something hubby has to comply with on his job.
I do want to stress, however, (because I myself got temporarily confused) that what you sell is SSKI, which is a much more concentrated liquid than other forms of KI. I mean, because what you sell is a LIQUID, I don't want people to become (even temporarily confused) as to how much to take. They do not have to take a full 2ml of SSKI to obtain their 130mg of iodide!
You have stated the information you have needed to state. I have read that here, and at the other site. But I wish to stress that when people read the gov site, and see how much to take based on milliliters, that what they NEED to pay attention to is the milligram amount they need, and KNOW the SOURCE of the KI they are getting.
You have stated quite clearly that what you sell, for example, has 30mg of KI per drop. THAT is the info people need to keep straight.
I know I am being redundant, but that simply means that for protection against radioactive Iodine from nuclear fallout, one need take a lot LESS SSKI to obtain the 130mg an adult needs, than other forms of ki they can purchase.
What you sell is amazingly cost-effective! In my opinion, everyone should have a bottle of it in their collection of needed supplies.
The nature of our world is such that we have MANY nuclear facilities around the world. One could survive many "meltdowns" if one has SSKI , instead of simple KI.
Sorry so wordy and redundant, but I felt it necessary to restate.
HEY...I know, people!
Think of it this way. You can get KI in ready to drink format, (like the juice-in-a-box) some buy for their kids' lunchboxes.
OR
You can get your KI in SS (concentrated) form, where you need to mix the drops into water - much like the concentrated juices you have to mix in water first before you can drink it.

This is a reply to # 1,783,108You're welcome - and thank you for the confirmation. I've noticed a trend with a few people. Not everyone, mind you - but there are some who want us to answer when they say:
"just tell me how much to take" (I've had family do that).
WE cannot do that here. We do the best we can by being as clear as possible, but ultimately THEY must take responsibility by reading the info given, so that they can make an informed decision.
After all, it is their body.
