Chris Cannon (R-UT) Most Corrupt Report 2006 - Rep. Cannon apparently paid six of his eight children from his campaign payroll and abused his position to benefit his brother, a registered lobbyist. Rep. Cannon was defeated in the 2008
Republican primary election by current Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT).
Randy "Duke" Cunningham (R-CA) Most Corrupt Report 2005 - Rep. Cunningham resigned from the House of Representatives on Nov. 28, 2005, after pleading guilty to accepting at least $2.4 million in bribes and underreporting his income for 2004. He was sentenced to eight years and four months in prison and ordered to pay $1.8 million in restitution, and is currently serving his sentence at a federal prison in Tucson, Arizona. His expected release date is June 4, 2013.
Nathan Deal (R-GA) Most Corrupt Report 2009 - Rep. Deal resigned from Congress on March 21, 2010 to run for governor of Georgia. The OCE subsequently found Rep. Deal may have violated House rules by using congressional
resources to influence Georgia state officials to preserve a state inspection program and that he failed to
provide accurate information on his personal financial disclsoure forms. Rep. Deal is now under investigation
by the Department of Justice.
John Doolittle (R-CA) Most Corrupt Reports 2006/2007/2008 - In April 2007, Rep. Doolittle stepped down from the House
Appropriations Committee after an FBI raid on his Virginia home. The investigation centered on his ties to convicted former lobbyist Jack Abramoff. Under pressure from the Republican leadership, Rep. Doolittle did not run for re-election in 2008. In June 2010, Mr. Doolittle said the DOJ had closed the investigation without filing charges. Rep. Doolittle is now a registered lobbyist.
Tom Feeney (R-FL) Most Corrupt Reports 2005/2006/2007/2008 - The House ethics committee found in January 2007 that Rep. Feeney had inappropriately accepted a golf trip to Scotland from lobbyist Jack Abramoff. Rep. Feeney lost his reelection bid to current Rep. Suzanne Kosmas (D-FL) on Nov. 4, 2008. In 2009, the Department of Justice ended its investigation into Rep. Feeney's relationship with. Rep. Feeney is now a lobbyist in Florida with the firm Fowler & O’Quinn.
Vito Fossella (R-NY) Most Corrupt Report 2008 - Rep. Katherine Harris (R-FL) Most Corrupt Report 2006 - In February 2006, the Department of Justice revealed that Rep. Harris had received $32,000 in laundered campaign contributions from convicted contractor Mitchell Wade. Rather than seeking re-election, Rep. Harris challenged Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) for his seat. She lost.
Dennis Hastert (R-IL) Most Corrupt Report 2006 - Following the Democratic takeover of Congress, in November 2007, Rep. Hastert resigned his seat and is now a lobbyist for law firm Dickstein Shapiro.
J.D. Hayworth (R-AZ) Most Corrupt Report 2006 - Because of ethics problems stemming from his relationship with disgraced former lobbyist Jack Abramoff and his hiring of his wife to run his PAC, Rep. Hayworth lost his 2006 re-election bid to current Rep. Harry Mitchell (D-AZ). After a stint as a radio talk show host, he ran for Senate in 2010 and lost to Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) in the Republican primary.
Duncan L. Hunter (R-CA) Most Corrupt Report 2007 - Rep. Hunter's ethics problems stem from his ties to Rep. Cunningham's corruption scandal. He retired from the House of Representatives in 2008 and ran an unsuccessful presidential campaign.
William Jefferson (D-LA) Most Corrupt Reports 2005/2006/2007/2008 - Rep. William Jefferson was indicted on 16 counts related to corruption and bribery on June 4, 2007. On Nov. 4, 2008, Rep. Jefferson lost his re-election bid to current Rep.
Anh Cao (R-LA). He was found guilty of 11 counts of public corruption on Aug. 5, 2009, and on Nov. 13, 2009, he was sentenced to 13 years in prison. He is free pending appeal.
John Murtha (D-PA) Most Corrupt Reports 2006/2007/2008/2009 - Rep. Murtha, the former chair of the House Appropriations
Subcommittee on Defense, was under investigation for his ties to defense lobbying firm PMA Group and defense contractor Kuchera Industries. The ethics committee found no wrongdoing. He died on Feb. 8, 2010.
Marilyn Musgrave (R-CO) Most Corrupt Reports 2005/2006 - Rep. Musgrave appeared to have misused official resources for campaign activity. Rep. Musgrave lost her 2008 re-election bid to current Rep. Betsy Markey (D-CO). She is now project director for Susan B. Anthony List's Votes Have Consequences Project.
Bob Ney (R-OH) Most Corrupt Report 2005 - Rep. Ney resigned in November 2006, after pleading guilty to charges of
conspiracy to defraud the United States and falsifying financial information on disclosure forms, both related to
his association with convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff. On Jan. 19, 2007, Rep. Ney was sentenced to 30 months in prison. He began serving his time in prison on Mar. 1, 2007 in West Virginia, and was released on Aug. 15, 2008. He now hosts a conservative talk show in Moundsville, W.V.
Steve Pearce (R-NM) Most Corrupt Reports 2007/2008 - Rep. Pearce failed to disclose a $12 million sale of his business and appeared to have exchanged legislative assistance for campaign contributions. In 2008, Rep. Pearce stepped down from the House and unsuccessfully ran for Senate, losing to current Sen. Tom Udall (D-NM). He is
currently running as the Republican candidate for his former House seat.
Richard Pombo (R-CA) Most Corrupt Reports 2005/2006 - Rep. Pombo appeared to have exchanged votes for campaign donations, abused his position to financially benefit , interfered in a federal banking investigation to protect a campaign donor, abused franking privileges, used campaign funds to pay his wife and brother, and used federal funds for campaign expenses and personal travel. Rep. Richard Pombo lost his 2006 re-election bid to current Rep. Jerry
McNerney (D-CA). Rep. Pombo made an unsuccessful bid for Congress in 2010, losing a House Republican
primary.
Rick Renzi (R-AZ) Most Corrupt Reports 2005/2006/2007/2008 - In 2008, after he had decided not to run for re-election, Rep. Renzi was indicted on multiple counts, including extortion and fraud. He was charged with supporting legislation in exchange for a land deal that made him more than $700,000. A trial date has not been set.
Don Sherwood (R-PA) Most Corrupt Report 2006 - Rep. Sherwood was sued for allegedly physically abusing his girlfriend and it appears he earmarked for his own financial benefit. On Nov. 7, 2006, Rep. Sherwood lost his re-election bid to current Rep. Chris Carney (D-PA). He owns a car dealership in Pennsylvania.
John Sweeney (R-NY) Most Corrupt Report 2006 - Rep. Sweeney lost his 2006 re-election bid to Democrat challenger Kristen Gillibrand. After the election, federal authorities confirmed they were investigating him for his ties to a lobbying firm. In 2010, Mr. Sweeney was sentenced to 30 days in prison for drunk driving.
Charles Taylor (R-NC) Most Corrupt Reports 2005/2006 - Rep. Taylor appears to have been involved in a series of fraudulent loans to a political supporter and exchanging legislative assistance for campaign contributions. Rep. Taylor lost his 2006 re-election bid to current Rep. Heath Shuler (D-NC). Taylor is a former chairman of Blue Ridge Savings Bank in Asheville, NC.
Curt Weldon (R-PA) Most Corrupt Report 2006 - Rep. Weldon lost his 2006 re-election bid to current Rep. Joe Sestak (D-PA). The DOJ investigated Rep. Weldon for assisting the clients of his daughter's lobbying shop. Rep. Weldon was not charged, but his chief of staff pleaded guilty to related corruption charges in 2007. After leaving office, Rep. Weldon worked for Defense Solutions, a private defense consulting firm.
Jerry Weller (R-IL) Most Corrupt Report 2007 - Rep. Weller repeatedly failed to report assets he bought and sold in Nicaragua, misused his position to sell foreign property, and appeared to have exchanged campaign contributions for
legislative assistance. Rep. Weller did not run for re-election in 2008. He is now the chairman of New World
Group, a consulting firm.
Heather Wilson (R-NM) Most Corrupt Report 2007 - Rep. Wilson improperly contacted a sitting U.S. Attorney about an ongoing investigation. In October of 2007, Rep. Wilson announced she would not seek re-election in 2008, and instead ran for retiring Sen. Pete Domenici's seat. She lost in the primary to former Rep. Steve Pearce. She is president of Heather Wilson and Company, based on Albuquerque, NM. Former Senators
Conrad Burns (R-MT) Most Corrupt Reports 2005/2006 - Sen. Burns's ethics problems stem from his ties to convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff, and the apparent exchange of legislative assistance for campaign contributions. Sen. Burns lost his 2006 re-election bid to current Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT). In January 2008, former Senator Burns was notified he was no longer under investigation by the DOJ for his ties to Jack Abramoff. He now works for Gage, a
Washington consulting company.
Norm Coleman (R-MN) Most Corrupt Report 2008 - Sen. Coleman appears to have accepted lodging in violation of gift rules, and was under investigation by the DOJ for not disclosing gifts and money received from a friend. Sen. Coleman lost his 2008 re-election bid to current Sen. Al Franken (D-MN). Coleman is now a consultant to the Republican Jewish Committee, and chief executive officer of the nonprofit American Action Network.
Larry Craig (R-ID) Most Corrupt Report 2007 - On August 8, 2007, Sen. Craig pleaded guilty to misdemeanor disorderly conduct in connection to an incident at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. Sen. Craig did not run for reelection. He has since opened a consulting firm, New West Strategies, with offices in Idaho and Washington.
Pete Domenici (R-NM) Most Corrupt Report 2007 - Sen. Domenici did not run for reelection in 2008. In April 2008, he was admonished by the Senate ethics committee for his role in the U.S. attorney firings scandal. The DOJ
investigated his role in the matter and found his actions were politically motivated, but were not illegal. He is
now a senior fellow at the Bipartisan Policy Center.
Bill Frist (R-TN) Most Corrupt Reports 2005/2006 - Sen. Frist appears to have engaged in dubious financial activities and violated campaign finance law, securities law and Senate ethics rules. Sen. Frist did not run for re-election in 2006. He is currently a partner at Cressey and Company, a private equity firm.
Rick Santorum (R-PA) Most Corrupt Reports 2005/2006 - Sen. Santorum appears to have improperly enrolled his children in a Pennsylvania school while living in Virginia, and misused his legislative position in exchange for contributions. On Nov. 7, 2006, Sen. Santorum lost his re-election bid to current Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA). He is a senior fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center.
Ted Stevens (R-AK) Most Corrupt Reports 2007/2008 - On October 27, 2008, Sen. Stevens was convicted of seven felony corruption charges for accepting home renovations from a VECO executive and lying about it. He subsequently
lost his re-election bid to current Sen. Mark Begich (R-Ak). On April 1, 2009, the DOJ dropped all charges against the former senator due to prosecutorial misconduct. Stevens died in a plane crash in Alaska in August 2010.
