i forget where i read this recently, i think it was on the andreas forum - the thyroid when it is deficient in
Iodine creates a goiter - an enlarged thyroid - to catch more iodine.
i've recently diagnosed myself with hypothyroid, via the temperature technique - take the temp under your arm first thing in the morning, before you get up (yes, even before you go pee!). if the temp is 97.4 you're thyroid is working ok, if its below 97.4, its low. mine was a full degree low.
if you look below at rsudler's notes to me, and to jackdaw's, they gave really good advice to me.
i started taking the following last week -
rejuvedine (detoxified iodine)
http://www.cayceconcepts.com
here's a review of rejuvedine - (called atomidine, in the review - same stuff).
Edgar Cayce recommended this form of
Iodine for low thyroid and a host of other problems (bacterial). atomidine is made by large companies that sell cayce stuff, but its not as good as the rejuvedine.

maca root
extra virgin coconut oil (www.mercola.com)
nutritional yeast, for the amino acids - thyroxin, one of the main thyroid hormones, is made from tyrosine and iodine. 2 tablespoons of nutritional yeast have 350 mg of tyrosine - 1/3 the rda.)
i haven't taken my temp, but my skin - which was my indicator that there might have been a problem - has gotten so much better- the bags under my eyes have improved in just a few days. also i've already lost some weight. so these are good signs.
Some people take amour(sp?) thyroid, which is i think bits of a pig thyroid. but... for me i'd rather take wholesome food and let the body put it together.
one thing to watch out for is soy & flouride, both bad for the thyroid.
