Hiatal hernias will generally create a "catching" feeling at the base of the sternum when harder objects are swallowed such as tough steak or pills. Some chiropractors can put these back in. Here is an old post on hiatal hernias:

If it is H. pylori the second option is licorice root, which kills H.pylori and also helps to build up the adrenals. I recommend boiling the root for 15 to 20 minutes in water to make a tea that he can drink throughout the day.

just curious, would taking the herb in powdered form have the same effect? if so why do you recommend tea in this case when you usually recommend powders?
With certain herbs such as slippery elm and marshmallow root boiling the herbs causes the polysaccharides in the herb to gel up as it cools forming a mucilage that helps to soothe the mucous membranes. The powder does this to an extent, but when a mucilage is needed the herbs are best boiled first.
can you make teas out of powders?
Yes, the amount just has to be adjusted to a level teaspoon per cup of water.
