Zukunft told reporters that he saw only one large patch of emulsified oil, about 12 miles off Grand Isle, Louisiana, during his six-hour aerial tour. No oil could be seen in Louisiana's Lake Borgne, Lake Pontchartrain or Chandeleur Sound, while only a light sheen was visible in other parts of the Gulf.
"The oil is basically approaching the end of its life cycle," he said.
Oil had gushed from the ruptured well for nearly three months after the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded April 20, leaving 11 workers dead. Officials have said a relief well is the only permanent solution to the disaster, which saw as much as 60,000 barrels (2.5 million gallons) of crude spewing into the Gulf every day.

I, personally, think there is still a
huge amount of oil dispersed through the
Gulf...and only independent verification
would convince me otherwise.

This is a reply to # 1,659,756I think the media gets kickbacks and tax breaks proportional to the amount of public relations propaganda they successfully sell to the public.
Any 'science' about oil decomposition is NOT NEW (with all the oil spills in the past, they would have known before if this would happen). It simply is an attempt to 'pacify' us for the remainder of the hurricane season (when little will be done and much will accumulate) and probably also because BP is going to try it's own FINAL EXIT from the whole situation (at least partially).

This is a reply to # 1,659,778Done to pacify those who think its Tony Haywards fault that all of this happened. Heads have to roll, Hayward made a great scapegoat. Of course, he kind of put himself into that position. My guess is that there were higher-ups that orchestrated all of this, and probably told him what to say. Who knows, perhaps Hayward was in on the plan too, but probably not. My guess is he was placed in a self-destructive role. Hayward doesnt run BP, BP runs Hayward.

This is a reply to # 1,659,926What has happened to the stimulus money in the very depressed county that I live in, is that it's been distributed to all the county and state agencies, and they are using to for 'secret shoppers' who are trying to catch mom and pop businesses making mistakes.
They are undercover, and they act like Starksey and Hutch.
They record the conversation, try to set up the shopkeep, and they use any excuse that they can to put the shopkeep out of business.
Last weekend, someone with a new shop got arrested by code enforcement with a 2000. $ fine because see had her bills in her cash box going backwards. (It's supposed to be 1,5,10,20, & she went 20,10,5,1) another vendor got arrested for sneaking a smoke, which turned out to be a criminal misdemeanor (counts against you in the three strikes and you are out law), and wound up with a $2400.00 fine.
We are talking micro businesses here, most people in fleamarkets are just getting started. we like it because they have really good security, and it's only three days a week, most businesses don't survive.
Now with the state, feds and county going at them, they won't.
We bought a security system, so we can record everything, if we get two or three sets of secret shoppers a weekend.
One of the barkeeps got arrested for serving beer to a minor, and convicted, because the undercover cop was about 50, showed an ID that said she was 17, and the guy thought it had to be joke, and served her anyway.
I can't wait to see what they do to bigger businesses, they have just passed a new whistleblower law, which gives whistleblowers (people who turn their boss in for doing something illegal) a cut of the fine.
I couldn't believe this one, you have an employee who isn't doing their job, and boom they find something you are dong wrong, and bam! you go to jail.
Talk about job creation!
Unless you are bernie madoff,
We don't have to wait for Maoist style reeduction camps, we now have it at the workplace!

country?? Where does one find the
regulations to even know that they
have broken "laws"?? I am truly
stunned that this sort of behavior
is going on. Now, I know why I am
carded and ask the person, "You
are kidding, right?", and they
say sadly, "no...". I would imagine
a jury would not see it the way
that "secret shoppers" do. Isn't
entrapment illegal any more?
I mean, its one thing if a person
IS guilty of trying to circumvent
the law but to Barney Fife every
little move...what is the deal
with the way money is positioned
in a cash drawer? If you are a
lefty it would be appropriate.
Jeeeeeeeeeeez, this administration
HATES Americans.

This is a reply to # 1,660,235no, sorry, this goes on everday in the USA. You can tell it's a secret shopper, because they are generally demanding and rude, because they know if they do that you might make a mistake.
In general, most people can't afford to go to court, paying an attorney for a court trial is pretty expensive, even with a sympathetic attorney.
Criminal attorneys' want their money up front, not that I blame them, but no cash, no attorney, no trial.
Public defenders are spread so thin than they can only work on cases where the person is apt to go to prison, even then, not much help there.
A lot of the local agencies have the cops on commission, so they get a percentage of the fines they levee.
right now, we have a guy who sells bongs next to us, his parents were genius business people, he's a dead head, they set him up in a business that they knew he'd be able to run.
Because the state is about to legalize marajuana, they are cracking down on all the little head shops, so they passed a law that you must have only 20% of your sales be paraphenalia. He gets a set of 'secret shoppers' everyday, photographing his shop, and at least one family a day sending in an minor to see if he will sell to them (also illegal).
Why do you think that entropment is illegal in this country, they do it all day long to us.

This is a reply to # 1,660,235oh, and as far as finding the regulations, if you inquire, they figure you are probably breaking the law, and they are all over you. I made the mistake of trying to find out the regulations on importing shell from the US fish and wildlife dept. I got an answer two months later, and then regular visits from both undercover fish and wildlife, and uniformed fish and wildlife. they go up and fondle the jewelry that we make to try to figure out if it's somehow breaking some law.
We have code enforcement crawling all over our neighborhood, one of our neighbors died about a year ago. He was a Vietnam vet, had agent orange exposure, not well off, and he was taking care of his 89 year old mother, who is still alive, but very frail.
His mobile home is now overgrown with weeds and plants, and code is all over his elderly mother, and is fining her for not keeping up his trailer, she isn't even aware that he is dead most of the time.
That is just one expample, I can give you dozens.
It's worse under Obama, under Bush, it was a little saner, but not much.
I think it's just gotten worse with every administration, and it's a function of the governement increasing in size and power. I think I read somewhere that at the end of the Roman empire, they had four complete courts, and they required that taxes be paid in gold, but they paid salary in fiat currency.
I know that at the end of the Maya empire, the people were supporting an incredible number of royal aristocrats, we are in the same position.
Obama has massively increased the number of regulatory agencies, and added lots of CZARs, we get to pay for all of them, and they will have to justify their exsistance by finding someone to regulate. I just can't wait!

This is a reply to # 1,660,240they didn't have the money to take it to court. They shut down the business, and they didn't work for a year.
It actually happened to a woman, she and her husband have a greek deli , which they opened after they closed their restaurant. They fight about it every day, they are still blaming each other because they lost so much because of the arrest.
(They don't serve liquor of any kind anymore)

This is a reply to # 1,660,240Oh, in chicago, they all it the 'egg inspector'. We at the fleamarket call them secret shoppers, that way we can tell each other when to watch out without upsetting the customers, I am sure there are other terms in other places.

Approaching the end of it's life cycle my arse!
Oil decomposes slowly and, though oil may be dispursing that is not at all the same as saying it is disappearing completely. In the process of dispursing, each gallon of oil pollutes about one million gallons of water - and the figure is probably higher in the Gulf when Corexit is factored in. Though perhaps not as noticeable as the heavy oil slicks seen in aerial and other photography, only a single quart of oil can produce an oil slick of over one acre.
Plus, like you said, there is all that oil that has been kept or sunk below the surface. And, thanks to BP's beach cover up, we have all those tar balls and all that oil and Corexit that has been buried beneath the graded and compacted sand which will now be leaching oil and poisons up onto the beach for decades.
