We are a small organic dairy farm in Canada. We are thinking about doing a little experiment of putting De in the drinking water for the livestock, Maybe we can have see more healthy Cows and less vet bills. also one horse has weak hoofs and this might help her. Where is a good place to get quality product in bulk

This is a reply to # 1,613,770If you put it in the water, it will sink to the bottom. They'll get the silica which is great, but for parasites and worms, you need to add it to their food somehow.
I also use it on their fur or feathers [I have goats and chickens and ducks and geese and cats!] by just dusting it onto them, trying very hard not to breathe the fine dust.
I also put it in the stalls, sheds and such where the animals stay to reduce flies and other pests. This also works around plants, trees, gardens, etc.
I also take the D.E. myself for the silica and for the parasite and general internal cleansing.
Now if I could find something to keep the algae from forming in the water tubs and duck ponds!!!

Peroxide. They also sell barley straw bales for ponds. As they decompose they release peroxide that destroys the algae. Here is an example:

Store bought peroxide will work as well, but the advantage of the barley straw is a slow and continuous production of peroxide.
A pond ozone generator will also produce peroxide.

Yes, this is where I first learned about using peroxide. A guy from the aquarium store had told me about it to control the algae in my saltwater tank. What he did not mention was that the peroxide would also kill the bacteria bed, which shot up the ammonia levels and killed all my fish. Now I stick to aquarium ozonators that generate small amounts of peroxide. Or if you use regular peroxide I would only add a few drops at a time.

This is a reply to # 1,614,299how wonderful!! (the barely straw)I'm putting this in my home and land file. Had to smile--I was envisioning a big bale floating past some bemused ducks, with some smaller creatures taking advantage of the barge aspect. But the listing makes it clear it's quite small -- it's a 'cube', or a bird-sized bale, I guess.

can i use this to replace DE?I am not sure why they are calling that a chelate. Chelates are bound to amino acids, and I don't see anything to do with an amino acid in that description. That is also outrageously expensive. I know several raw material suppliers here in the US that carry silica and silicon citrate for a lot less, but the shipping to Canada would likely be pretty hefty. And you do not need much at all for the water so I would go with a Canadian source at least to start. If you are going to use large amounts in the long run then a raw material supplier would be a better bet.

This is a reply to # 1,615,119Yes it is cloudy when first put in water but it settles at the bottom eventually. Once it settles, the livestock won't get much D.E. tho. I'd put it in their feed instead so they get the actually D.E. That is what will de-worm them and rid them of parasites.

Yes. It may take a day or two to fully settle out initially. After that it should settle out pretty quick.

I just put a Big tablespoon in our water pitcher , is it supposed to be Cloudy like this?It will settle out. It may take a few days initially as the ultrafine particles take longer to settle out. In the future though it will settle out faster. This will not hurt you, but it can make the water taste a little muddy and can make it gritty.
