Hi~! I'm new to this site, I was looking for side effects of the Mirena and stumbled upon this site! Here is my story: I had the Mirena put in May of 2009 and had no significant side effects untill November 09. I noticed a bald spot on the top left side of my head. I immediately went to see my Primary Physician who checked my Thyroid, which was normal so he thought it was Alopecia Areata. He put me on medications which was not helping. I would still have a sink full of hair in the morning after brushing my hair which has never, ever happended to me before. He finally sent me to a Dermatologist, she took a biopsy of my head which came back as a fungus. She put me on 3 different kinds of meds. My hair is still falling out and she told me last week my meds have taken care of it and my hair should not be falling out anymore. Now she suggest taking the Mirena out, that the Mirena could be the culprit...after all! I'm so frustrated and its so devistating to be 23 and have 10 differnt bald spots on your head. Its getting harder and harder for me to cover them up. Has anyone else experienced anything like this??

MoreThis is a reply to # 1,600,890I never realized that it could possibly be the mirena, but this was one of my worst symptoms. I also had "spots" and always lots of hair "shedding" everywhere. I was also diagnosed with alopecia areata. Got a few shots and was told that it was due to stress. (What isn't?)
I had the Mirena taken out in September and since then no spots. I also switched to no Sodium Laurel Sulfate shampoos. (Look in the natural health section). Hair is growing back very nicely and can comb and wash hair with no falling out!!- Re: Mirena and hair loss RStar2004

MoreThis is a reply to # 1,600,947Wow! Sounds just like what i've been going through! I have had all kinds of blood work done to make sure that I didn't have a Immune Disorder.
Thanks, i'm so glad to know that i'm not the only person out there with this problem and that there is actually hope! It's so devistating with the bald spots. I have "peach fuzz" (which is blonde) growing in all of my spots. I even have more coarse dark hair(I have dark brown hair) growing in spots so i'm hopefull. Thanks again, this truely is helpful and I will be contacting my DR. tomorrow to get this devil taken out!- Re: Mirena and hair loss damselind

This is a reply to # 1,600,978Yes, mine has all grown back and all started with "peach fuzz" It took some time but it all is back right now. I can't say for sure, but I now believe that it was the hormones causing it. I can't say for sure because its only been six months, but I have to say my trips to the hairdresser have been with "no dread" lately! It used to be that when one spot started to grow in another (or a few) would be falling out. Ususally the spots were about 1-2" accross. I am lucky that it always happened where you really couldn't see it, and like you, I have kind of thick, dark hair. I think it took a month or two to realize that my hair had stopped falling out. Hang in there!!
BTW: When you get it out, prepare for a week or so of hormone roller-coaster! Not fun!- Re: Mirena and hair loss Bass81

This is a reply to # 1,601,592The things that hormones do to your body are bizarre. The last time I went off Birth Control Pills (pre Mirena) I lost half the hair on my head, which took about a year to grow back. Surprise! When the hair grew back it was CURLY when previously I have had very straight hair. My hair didn't fall out with Mirena, but got even curlier. Removal hasn't changed this. Seeing pictures of my in my early 20's and now I look like a different person. Good luck with your removal!
