I believe that the recommended daily intake would be about 500 to 700 mg per day. Also, for proper absorption, you must include calcium at a ratio of about 1 to 2. So if you take 500 mg of magnesium, you should also take 1,000 mg of calcium.
Let me point you to another article that will give you more information.

Hi Anja,
It's double the calcium to mag. Try it this way and see if your symptoms subside. Also, in the above article you will see foods that are rich in magnesium.
I am not familiar with your gut issues, but could you have some type of inflammation going on in your system? Have you tried digestive enzymnes containing serrapeptase? Below is an article that you may find helpful.

Actually this is incorrect. The whole concept of taking magnesium to treat restless leg syndrome is through calcium antagonization. Same for using magnesium to treat high blood pressure, muscle tightness, constipation, etc. Magnesium works as a natural calcium channel blocker so it counters the muscle contracting effects of calcium.
If using magnesium for bone health then it should be taken with calcium. But even then the ratio is debatable. I prefer a 1:1 concentration, not a 2:1, and both minerals should be in an acidified form, not as an oxide or carbonate. I prefer the malates with citrates as my second choice. Both the magnesium and the malic acid (malate) increase ATP levels helping to power the cells and for them to function properly.
