Dr Jeff,
I know this isn't your alley but I trust very few people's advice so I wanted to try here first. My friend(female age 24) has a cyst in her throat. The Endocrinologist has been next to no help and her next recommendation is a biopsy. Right now all we know is it is a thyroid nodule and her bloodtest results are as follows
T3, TOTAL 99 76-181 ng/dL
T4, FREE 0.9 0.8-1.8 ng/dL
TSH, 3RD GENERATION 0.11 L mIU/L
indicating subclinical hyperthyroid.
Do you have any recommendations on what type of therapy or any endocrinologist who you trust? Her options right now appear to be radioactive iodine therapy or surgical removal, both of which she'd prefer to avoid. Thanks in advance!

This is a reply to # 1,543,687Most thyroid problems are autoimmune and most autoimmune originates in the digestive tract.
There are several avenues that I would choose to follow first:
A pre- and post-halide test to screen for substances that may block iodine from being utilized by her thyroid.
The McCombs Plan - most digestive imbalances result in reduced hydrochloric acid in the stomach which is necessary for iodine absorption.
Immune system blood panels. These are rather pricey, but provide good information about what the immune system is doing.

MoreThis is a reply to # 1,544,427I forgot to mention, the major nodule is about 4 cm in width
and took up the majority of iodine in the radioactive iodine uptake test
(the "normal" thyroid tissue did not, which was a good sign according to her doctors) and the nuclear medicine doctor inferred that the nodule was not responding to my pituitary gland as it should.

This is a reply to # 1,544,577It was only a "good" sign based on them wanting to use radioactive iodine to treat the nodule.
The fact that the normal tissue did not take up any iodine, or very little, may be indicative of other halides binding the recptor sites of the normal tissue.
If she wants to avoid surgery or radiation, then she should consider the urinary halide pre- and post-testing - http://www.vrp.com/ProductPage.aspx?ProdID=9137&zType=1.
It will determine if there is an imbalance in tissue binding. The McCombs Plan can help in many ways overall and may have a specific effect on the tissues.
