I have to agree with megan.
Disinformation appears rampant on the web and even in this forum due to a simple lack of research.
Mucus is an inflammatory response to the intestines to infection. Many people mistakenly seem to think of these cleanses as a "clean sweep" of sorts whereby they pass the squirming worms and its done. In actuality, as the adult
parasites break down they release innumerable eggs and larvae, this causes a chain reaction in the intestines. This would occur during cleansing and could result in such occurrences as diarrhea or constipation, mucus, pus and even hemorrhoids. Other transient phenomena often referred to is the muscle twitching ("scattering"), floaters, liver pain, "tight" throat, coughing of mucus from the lungs ... all which is, well, as I said, transient and is either a direct result of physical assault from larvae itself or the immunological response of the bodies defense.
Regarding the scattering issue, most
parasites tend to localize particular areas where they can easily acquire adequate nutrition, and with very specific exceptions, excludes sinuses, eyes (toxicara), or even the lungs (paragonimiasis, cryptostrong). This is not to say any of these reactions are any less annoying or even, in some paritcular cases harmful.
parasites though, for the most part, tend to be insidious beyond the acute infection stage, and will only make their presence known when threatened. The name of the game is survival through stealth. And make no mistake, these guests will not go quietly.
