And so does another family member.
Any recommendations beside lots of tea? I'm wondering how do we know if it's the flu?
I feel like fecal matter and there's lots of coughing, sneezing, stuffy sinus's and lethargy going on.
H1N1 was mostly upper respiratory which sounds like a cold to me.
Hi Gina
One of the most important things I learned at naturopathic nutrition college was about the directional movement of illness as related to TCM.
There is a pathway that moves from the Bowels - to Lungs - to Skin - to Head
So, whenever you experience some blocked feeling in the head, as with colds and flu, you work backwards down the pathway. (This also applies for those who get some brain fog)
1. Skin - SWEAT!!!!!!!! Get in a really hot bath - if you have it to hand, add a cup of epsom salts and some cayenne and ginger (tinctures or powders) - if you have the energy do do so, dry skin brush before getting in the bath to open up the pores. If you can't do the whole body, just concentrate around the major lymph nodes (armpits, stomach, back of knees etc. .. do a google for pictures) - other options are to have a sauna if you have access. Stay warm, sweating/creating a fever is a naturopathic way to turn on the self-healing mechanism.
2. Lungs - get some hot water in a bowl and use as a facial steam bath - Eucalyptus oil is cheap - you can add 5 drops into the water and BREATHE deeply into your lungs. If you have any olbas oil or Vicks, then you can also add those to the water and rub onto your chest/lung area. It will heat your lungs up so you can expel waste. If you can get it, grate a tablespoon of fresh horseradish and eat - it's hot but it will move your lungs.
3. Bowels - An enema when you have any type of cold/flu is a sure way to shift it quickly. You want to rid the body of toxic waste ASAP. If you don't do enemas, you could try a salt water flush or take enough magnesium to get the bowels moving quickly.
If you can stand the taste of garlic, get some fresh cloves, mash them up and rub them onto the soles of your feet - You will probably get to taste it in your mouth within 20 minutes!
Also, anything that you have to hand that is an immune booster or stress releaser - garlic, echinacea, pau d'arco, vit C & B etc. are very helpful.
Another thing, If you can, fast for the day - when the body has a cold or flu, it wants to spend it's energy in self healing. Digestion takes up a LOT of energy, so limits the amount of energy you can use for self healing when you are ill.
Drink LOTS of warm fluids - herbal teas, light vegetable soups and water. Do not drink any cold drinks. You want to create warmth in the body. A high temperature promotes a quicker healing response.
There's lots more you could do, but I'm not sure what you have to hand.
Wrap up warm, especially around your neck.
Something I've noticed, is that when people have colds and flu, there has usually been some stress in their lives and this can be lived out in the body ... maybe consider using the next few days as "me time" - just to chill out, do some self nurturing work, watch some funny films etc. so you can start feeling really good about life and get back out into the world again.
Best wishes
Maya
One of the most important things I learned at naturopathic nutrition college was about the directional movement of illness as related to TCM. TCM??? There is a pathway that moves from the Bowels - to Lungs - to Skin - to Head Is this a two lane pathway or one way? Please explain more?? So, whenever you experience some blocked feeling in the head, as with colds and flu, you work backwards down the pathway. (This also applies for those who get some brain fog) Not sure I understand this. You mean, if your head is stuffed you began to do things back down the path in that order? Please explain more .... interesting!
Hey Mama :-)
TCM???
Traditional Chinese Medicine.
In TCM, they look at paired organs - Yin/Yang etc.
Yin organs are always working (produce, regulate, store, transform) - like us women hehe! - liver, heart, lungs, spleen, kidneys - Note, these organs are always doing something, even when we are rested or fasting.
Yang organs (mainly used for digestion and transmitting nutrients around the body) - small and large intestines, stomach, gallbladder, bladder - not always active.
A yin organ is paired with a yang organ.
E.g - Lungs and colon, gallbladder and liver, spleen and stomach
Each pair is assigned an element - such as Earth - spleen and stomach.
Each element is assigned a taste, e.g Earth - Spleen/Stomach = Sweet
Elements are also assigned emotional states etc. etc.
So the whole view of TCM is very holistic in nature and the use of herbal remedies is also looked at not just nutritionally, but from a view of what work needs to be done (Mind/Body/Spirit)
For example, I note that Hv often recommends Schizandra berries. It is a wonderful all round herbal. It covers ALL the 5 tastes, therefore works on all the different parts of the body. It is also said to quiet the spirit and calm the heart - so you often find this berry as part of a wide mix of adoptogenic formulas. I use it in medicinal soups and add it to raw smoothies.
TCM is a little complicated to explain unless you have studied the 5 elements, and how they interact with each other. Some are supportive, some are antagonistic etc.
However, getting to the point of movement, there are natural pathways that can be easily tracked when looking at how things move.
Is this a two lane pathway or one way? Please explain more??
Not sure I understand this. You mean, if your head is stuffed you began to do things back down the path in that order? Please explain more .... interesting!
It is one way. For example - you can not get a cold if you have a completely clean bowel.
1. If the bowels are completely clean and nourished (with good bacteria) you can not have lung congestion.
2. If the bowels and lungs are completely clear, you will not have skin problems.
If some or all of the bowels, lungs and skin are blocked - this moves toxic waste towards the head - sinus, brain fog, confusion etc ... colds and flu ...
From a genetic point of view, some people never get skin problems - so it moves from bowels to lungs to head.
Attention deficit is often part of this pathway. I've seen parents who had bowel issues (crohns, colitis etc.) give birth to kids who have either asthma (lungs) or eczema (skin) - that's why it's so common for kids to experience these. Then I've seen parents who had eczema and asthma as kids and then give birth to kids who are easily prone to ADD or depression (head) .... so there is a pathway from generation to generation.
Did I make sense? :-)
Hi InnerCalm,
Have you listened to Doreen Virtue? I get so much peace from her "Chakra Clearing" CD. Her voice and the music are so calming. I recommend it to everyone. It comes with a book that I've never read, but I put the CD in when I need to get rid of the days garbage, people etc. and relax.
It's two part: 20 min before you start your day and 20 min before going to sleep. I wore out the second part. Maybe it's time to be proactive.
Thanks for introducing me to Donna Eden. She has great videos on google:
WOW, wonderful information Maya. Thank You.
It reminds me of the old fashioned Mom remedies that make sense. Constipation/hypothyroid has been a constant problem and my first born has asthma. I took Swiss Kriss yesterday with good results and usually take it once a week.
My body temp regulator is off and I was afraid to take a shower or bath last night because I felt cold even with sweaters and blankets on, and I can't smell myself anyway. I thought about the toxins on my skin and how good it's going to feel when my head unclogs and I take one. But that may be backwards. I'm going to do it today like you said with steam and mints and enjoy all this "me time".
I called in sick and being able to lay around and not be in all the stress feels wonderful, even if I feel lousy physically. Having the internet is a great blessing. I would never have met you or gotten all this wonderful information.
Knowledge is power.
Have a wonderful day Maya.

This does sound like a cold, not the flu. Flu is generally associated with nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and muscle aches as well.
Yes teas are great. Especially ones that help induce sweating like yarrow. Andrographis is the best herb I know of for colds, and horehound is also great. Both are intensely bitter though.
Hot soups are also good since they will help you to sweat and will also provide fluid and electrolytes.
Bundle up with a lot of blankets and sweat, sweat, sweat! But stay hydrated as well. Try this and get some sleep and you will be surprised at how well you feel when you wake up.
Sucking on zinc lozenges are also great for the sore throat and the immune system. I also recommend vitamin C sources. If you got some amla try a big dose. A friend of mine in So. California does this and his employees do this when they have a cold and he says the amla knocks it right out. He takes a heaping tablespoon of the amla.
Don't try to dry up your sinuses with antihistamines. The nose runs to flush out pathogens.
...and took a spoonful early this morning and when I woke up it was like the water faucet was turned off and my head isn't swollen anymore. I'm not sure if it was the amla or just a two day cold (the bad part), but now my ears are ringing or pulsing from the loss of pressure. I'm not complaining, just mentioning it because the swelling went down so quickly.
Thanks!
