I read your post about your hubby...sorry to hear he's having trouble. Nicotine has such a broad effect on the body's chemistry...it's no suprise that he is having a flair up. Withdrawal of any type can lead to digestive dysfunction. I have also read some research that actually states that tobacco use can be beneficial for ulcerative colitis...but don't know how valid this is and would certainly not suggest that he go back to smoking!
While he's having an active episode he should be eating easily digested foods...nothing that would be too harsh on the intestines. AVOID using cascara sagrada or senna...both are irritating to the intestinal lining and may increase his symptoms. Aloe vera juice and slippery elm are both very soothing and healing to the intestinal mucosa and can be taken orally or used in enemas.
colonics are fine with mild to moderate colitis...but when more severe...mucous and bleeding...colonics are contraindicated and you might have difficulty finding someone to do them. Plain
water enemas should be fine for assisting his bowel movements...but don't overdo it and monitor his response closely. He should also be taking a glutamine supplement...IntestiNew by ReNew has several beneficial ingredients. Once this episode has passed he should gradually start adding more fiber to his diet...and do some more cleansing.
Castor oil packs would also be beneficial for him...they help to break up congestion and also assist the detox process.
