Effects of Acidosis and Alkalosis
To deviate from ideal salivary pH for an extended time invites illness. Acidosis, an extended time
in the acid pH state, can result in rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, lupus, tuberculosis, osteoporosis and
most cancers. If salivary pH is not in optimal ranges, the diet should focus on fruit and vegetables as
well as remove strong acidifiers such as sodas and red meat. Alkalosis, an extended time in the alkaline
state, results in most other diseases, such as the symptoms of constipation, flu, heart trouble,
indigestion, and bacterial and viral infections.
HOW TO MEAUSRE pH AND CORRECT IT
URINE: Allow the urine to run on a small piece of the pH tape.
SALIVA: Spit on the tape rather than putting the pH tape in your mouth.
Alternatively, you may urinate or spit in a small cup and then dip the pH tape in the fluid.
Immediately compare the color of the pH tape with the color chart and log it on your chart.
Log the first urination and designate it as such. The first urination is a composite of the acid/alkaline
swings during sleep and is analyzed separately. Measure the saliva at the same time. Note that urine
and saliva pH do not always coincide - one may be acid and the other alkaline.
Measure the pH of the second (or any subsequent) urination of the day.
If your urinary pH is not within the 6.4 to 6.8 range, take a gentle step to assist it.
If the tape shows acidic pH (less that 6.4) or too yellow, select one of the following:
1. Cool bath or shower.
2. 6 oz. pineapple juice or most other fruit juices, but not cranberry.
3. Fresh vegetable juice.
4. Herb teas: chamomile, peppermint, fenugreek, red clover, hibiscus.
5. Deep breathing, rapid exercise.
6. Salt and baking soda bath, or Epsom salt and baking soda bath. (2 lbs. salt, 2 lbs. baking soda in full
tub. Soak for an hour.
7. ½ tsp. citro-carbonate (available in drug stores) in water, but only use this when the other means are
not available, or the pH is unresponsive to other means
8. Lemon juice in water.
9. ½ tsp. baking soda plus ¼ tsp. cream of tartar plus juice of ½ lemon in 4 oz. water.
If the tape shows alkaline pH (more than 6.8) or appear too green or blue, select one of the following:
1. Hot bath or shower.
2. Mustard bath (1 oz. dry mustard in warm bath for 14 minutes - no longer!)
3. Drink unsweetened cranberry juice (dilute in water.)
4. Vinegar bath (2 cups vinegar to full tub. Soak 30 minutes.)
5. Herb teas: desert herb, spearmint, shave grass (horsetail), raspberry leaf, buchu.
6. Eat low-stress proteins: soaked seeds, sprouts, sesame tahini.
7. Eat sauerkraut, sour pickles, olives.
8. Take brisk walks with long strides.
Since it is often difficult to control and correct an acid pH through diet, homeopathic remedies can be
used. Natrum phosphoricum (Nat. phos.) is one of Schuessler’s cell salts and is useful for conditions
arising from excess lactic acid. Through the presence of Nat. phos., lactic acid is decomposed into
carbonic acid and water. Nat. phos. is able to bind itself to carbonic acid which is exhaled and
exchanged for oxygen. Nat. phos. is also necessary for dissolving uric acid in the blood. If uric acid is
not dissolved and deposited from its solution in the joints, then arthritic rheumatism occurs.
For alkalinity, homeopathic remedies based on the potassium salts can be effective. Such Kali
remedies impact the fundamental state of the vital force and therefore also the pH factor. Kali mur is
for when there is a thick white discharge, severe inflammation, sluggish liver, and when the throat and
Eustachian tubes are affected. Kali phos is indicated for jangled nerves, grief, despair, or sorrow, and
its hinders decay from infection. Kali sulph centers on the lungs, sinuses, bronchi, and skin and acts as
a lubricant to distribute oil whether it is lacking or clogging pores or glands.

There are a lot of books out these days that recommend making your diet more alkaline to improve your health. While I do think acid-alkaline balance is important in a person's diet, I always find these books a bit odd, because many of my past health problems stemmed from being too alkaline.
I started testing my urine pH years ago before it was "trendy" to do so. In my case my urine pH was out of the normal range on the alkaline side of the scale. Other family members had the same problem. When I switched my family to a more acidic diet, our bladder infections cleared up and both of my children's adult teeth started coming in all of a sudden. I suspect that previously my children had been suffering from delayed dentition because their bodies didn't have the right nutrients, or perhaps their bodies were not able to absorb the right nutrients to form their adult teeth, due to a lack of stomach acid. I noticed many of their allergies and chronic sinus and ear infections also cleared up as their diets became more acidic.
Researchers from Japan found that ovariectomized rats fed a low-calcium diet had better calcium absorption when the rats were fed on a diet containing 1.6% vinegar (a very acidic substance) for 32 days than when fed on a diet without vinegar. |
So for the last ten years or so I've been a firm believer in the value of acid - alkaline balance in the diet through first morning urine testing. I know a lot of traditional Western doctors feel this isn't helpful, but these are the same doctors who were putting my kids on endless cycles of antibiotics for years that did more harm than good. So I do feel in situations like this it is better to trust my own judgment than to blindly follow authority figures' advice, especially when that advice has harmed myself and my children in the past with unnecessary drugs with nasty side effects. Urine testing is inexpensive, easy to do, and seems to help with health issues based on my personal observations. I can't think of any downside to having my urine pH in the normal range.
Listed below are the correlations I've noticed between health issues and out of range urine pH with myself and other family members.
When the urine is too acidic, my family seems to also have many many of the following conditions:
In Ayurvedic (traditional Indian) medicine, an overly acid condition is associated with a pitta dosha. After taking my son to endless traditional and holistic Western doctors, we found the answers to my son's sweaty head at night and stomach aches on the Internet in Ayurvedic web sites. He fit the pitta dosha descriptions perfectly, and the recommended diets to balance a pitta dosha put him on the road to recovery. (The traditional yoga diet, which emphasizes a diet high in fresh fruit and vegetables, tends to be an alkaline diet.)
When the urine is too alkaline, I've noticed the following conditions seems to develop:
Please note most of the above lists are not taken from any books or studies - they are just my personal observations of what happens to my family when their urine pH gets out of normal range in either direction.
I think when we don't have enough acid it makes it easier for bacteria and fungus to thrive, hence the onset of bacterial and fungal related conditions. So I certainly don't agree with most of the popular books out today that everyone need to be more alkaline. There is a condition called alkalosis that can occur when body fluids become overly alkaline. Medical symptoms of alkalosis include muscle twitching, spasms, lightheadedness, confusion and tremors.
However, being too acidic seems to have it's own issues, including a condition called acidosis. Among other symptoms, metabolic acidosis can lead to a loss of calcium. In a 2006 study, researchers in Sweden found that an acid load in the human body can also cause a loss of renal magnesium . This could contribute to a deficiency of Mg which can lead to conditions conditions such as migraines, osteopenia, osteoporosis, and mitral valve prolapse.
Many holistic doctors recommend saliva or urine testing to determine your pH levels, but I've personally never found any correlation between health issues and saliva pH. Urine pH is the one measurement I've found most helpful.

Improving pH balance is the basic tool everyone should be aware of. Make a difference in how your body responds to foods and supplements!
Did you know that an imbalance in the body’s pH may lead to the following?
The answer is a resounding YES! Our pH balance can affect all major body systems, especially the digestive, intestinal, circulatory, respiratory, and immune systems. When we maintain a proper pH balance our metabolic functions work correctly which in turn allows our body to function at its best.
Determining your own pH balance (or lack thereof) is simple. All you need are some inexpensive pH test strips and a color chart. Testing twice daily for several days will give you a general idea how your body changes.
NOTE: You may be able to get test strips to determine pH balance at your local pharmacy, too. I like mine because come in a nice box with two charts; a range of normal pH by time period in the day, and a color chart that tells me exactly what my pH is. It’s easy to store & they don’t spill out so I prefer these. Of course it doesn’t hurt that there are 100 test strips in the box so there is enough for the whole family and to recheck for several months.
pH will vary between 6.5 - 6.8 for saliva, and 6.0 – 7.0 for urine. Usually urine tests more toward 6.0 in the morning and 7.0 just before dinner. The key here is balance. It should fluctuate between these points throughout the day, with saliva averaging 6.5.
Here are a few suggestions if you find you need to correct your pH balance.
In this instance the body is producing excess acid but the kidneys are doing their job and are flushing the acid. The pH of the tissue is soaking in a good range and the kidneys are handling the excess acid.
If this was my situation and I wanted to reduce acid in my body I would:
This is very acid and at the high end of the normal ranges for alkaline, and more serious. The pH of fluid around the cells is becoming alkaline but the kidneys are flushing the acid. Because there is a lot of acid the body, the body is trying to buffer it until it can get the acid out of the system. If the pH of saliva is going into 7.0 range the body has a hard time breaking down carbohydrates.
Here is what I would consider for pH balance in this case:
Drinking soda, eating fast food, white flour, coffee, heavy protein consumption, and lots of cheese, meat and refined carbohydrates will throw pH balance off and get us into this condition. Excess acid is being produced and the kidneys can't handle the load. It’s hard for the body to buffer and protect the cells. Buffering systems are stressed.
Try:
This is where the urine is alkaline and the saliva is acid. There is acid in the fluid around the cells. The buffering mechanisms are severely depleted. The kidneys are not able to filter the acids properly out of the blood. Acid is accumulating in the tissues and there is poor lymphatic drainage. People in this state feel unstable and have a sense of being wishy-washy.
Some suggestions would be:
There are 2 different reason as to why someones pH balance can go double alkaline.
How do you tell the difference? If they have the ammonia smell and the person is elderly or weakened this is the severe acid condition. If someone is on chemotherapy or a very severe diet such as when they are only eating fruit diet, strict vegetarian, no protein intake then this is true alkalosis.
I would start with the following in each case:
Here’s an interesting tidbit from Tonja Wells on the challenge with alkalosis and pH balance.
“Helping someone with double alkalosis is more challenging. When you ingest alkaloid herbs you will get alkaline poisoning like severe diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and spacey. This can happen when people get on severe vegetarian regime with low protein intake. They think this is a healthy way to be, but they get very spacey and very ungrounded. It can be difficult to work with these people. They think this is the way should eat but their body is sick. They keep thinking if they eat more fruits and vegetables and avoid the heavy mucus forming protein foods they will be OK but they are driving the body into double alkalosis and their body is falling apart.
“The solution is to increase consumption of acid forming foods, especially protein. This can be very difficult to convince this person to do. They are so alkaline their digestive system is out of whack so they must be on Food Enzymes and HCL (PDA). Protease is a protein digestive enzyme. Their body will be toxic due to the fact that when you get the double alkaline state the acid is being held inside the cells and it can't get out. Their body can't flush the acid out of the cells. You will want to do some colon and liver cleansing to the body can dump the toxins, which have been stored in the tissues.”
