Oh, count rare...
There is a very nice image of the guts on the website, showing the controller in a 44 pin QFP package. The smallest of the big IC packages, it is not fine-pitch, and has gull wing legs for strength and flex. But the pc board is so thick relative to its length that this thing just won't bend. The whole thing looks like it's been soldered with a wave tank rather than a reflow oven. Depending on the integrity of the enclosure, I bet this thing would continue to work after being hit with a baseball bat. Maybe not a home run, but definitely grounder down the baseline.
OTOH, LCD's of any size are relatively delicate. It is a sandwich made of two pieces of thin glass with a very strange liquid squished between them and a seal around the edges, plus some control brains is a far more "delicate" package. As with the pc board, smaller equals more rugged, and this is a very small display. Bad news is that it is a custom part, probably produced in very small volumes, not a generic display being produced by the millions.
Bottom line, as long as the display works, this thing should run forever.
And I love the variable output boost regulator design. The ultimate in a "stabilized wave".
