Imagine a rickety old hospital with a great big sign in front that says:
Hospital of Horrors
Imagine a clown named "The Joker" standing out front with a big toothless grin, waving at people to come in, saying "Step right up folks! Come on in! We take very good care people here! We promise! You can trust us!"
Fist stop was nuclear medicine for a bone density test. The machine didn't touch me, but I could feel something happening in my body. I wanted to climb off the table and leave. I asked the lady what they plan to do if they don't like the test results. She didn't know. I said that I read somewhere that osteoporosis is curable, so I wondered if they give people meds and then send them back for another test. She said that certainly made sense, but she had never seen anyone come back for a follow up test. This was not comforting to me. I wanted to panic. I wondered if she'd just given me the terminal dose, or what. There were warning signs everywhere. I was laying on a machine that had a big yellow triangle with an exclamation mark on it. It was sending radiation through my body. I could feel it. I wish I'd taken a gram of Iodine yesterday.
Next stop was x-ray.
They put me in a barrel that clicked and told me I was all done.
This is how it works...
You get all these tests done and nobody can answer any of your questions because they are not a doctor. You wait weeks to see a doctor, who doesn't have time to answer your questions, because there are dozens of people in the waiting room. The doctor gives you a prescriiption that doesn't make any sense. Everybody asks if you are in pain. Nurses, PAs, doctors, all are shocked when you say NO to pain meds. They ask you if you have been to the mental health clinic. You tell them no. They make an appointment for you to go to the mental health clinic. Mental health wants to know if you would like to take anti-depressants. You tell them you are not depressed and they are shocked, and suggest that you may need group therapy. You go to group therapy and everybody in the group is taking anti-depressants and talking about how depressed they are.
The medical industry consists of layer upon layer of "trust us we know what's best for you" professionals, none of whom know the answer to any of your questions. Everybody gets on the conveyer belt and goes through the assembly line because insurance will pay for it.
