Evogene, Monsanto work to up seed nitrogen intake

JERUSALEM - Israel's Evogene Ltd and Monsanto Co said on Tuesday they would cooperate on the development of seeds with an improved ability to absorb nitrogen that would boost their growth.

Under the agreement, giant U.S. biotech company Monsanto received the exclusive right to use genes found by Evogene that maintain the plant's yield despite a reduced supply of nitrogen, the companies said in a joint statement.

Monsanto will examine the effect of the genes on the improved absorption of nitrogen in corn, soya, canola and cotton seeds.

The companies did not disclose any financial details concerning their cooperation.

Nitrogen fertilizer is one of the highest expenses for the agricultural sector, and makes up a fifth of operating expenses for corn producers.

They are trying to engineer foods to take up MORE nitrogen... not good... not good at all.

Are they trying to fulfill "prophesy"?

Enough potassium will help to counter too much nitrogen... perhaps one of the reasons potassium was made hard to get in good nutritional forms of adequate amounts for supplementation across the globe was part of the plan... if you believe in that sort of thing.

Edit - To clarify, I agree with ML's post on this one... enough potassium will help to counter too much nitrogen, but only in the presence of adequate balancing minerals.

You see the potassium will help to ameliorate the affects of the nitrogen and make the plants "appear" (and us) to be healthy, however in the absence of other adequate balancing minerals, the plant (or us) is NOT entirely healthy and NOT fit to eat.

Apply or "modify" the plant to achieve too high a nutrient content of one over another and the balance is upset throughout the food chain. Some would say it is too late to balance it all out... we have f'd it up so bad, we cannot even begin to know what the balance is any more. What did it used to be like? what was the balance? The ones in the know state to reestablish the soil life and the center will be established.

There are a few people who have done amazing work here in the SW with a focused effort on establishing soil life... believe it or not, it works, it brings their test plots to life with the rainfall we get here... There actions are small proofs that we could eliminate the "global warming" (one could argue it is not warming at all but an escalation in weather extremes) problem according to them as ML wrote about here...

If, after studying this you choose to use ANYTHING to destroy the natural cycle of life in the soil, then we deserve what we get.
